    **CHAINS** Question?

Not much wrong with Oregon chains ;) Find one you like and off you go.

Biggest tree yet! And.... passing on the CAD

Why would anyone want a cure? It's like wanting to be cured of your arms and legs. Get the beer in, put your chaps through the wash, sharpen all the chains til they grin, sleep for a few hours and then start all over again. And don't be afraid to share, they'll thank you for it once they're up...

    My First Tree Work Video.

I think I'll avoid it for now. I've topped small trees by hand, putting in a couple of bowsaw cuts before retreating back down the ladder and hauling it out with a rope, but actually dropping it off while up there is another thing entirely, especially 50/60 feet up. I think I'll recognise my...

    Makita/Dolmar or Huskies

Ah, ok. My thinking was purely in terms of the clone army of leylandii facing the OP. I'm sure a 357XP could run 18 or 20 inches, the power output is probably about the same as my 266SE and it runs 20" with no bother, but a new 70CC will be another beast entirely if you want to get stuck into...

    My First Tree Work Video.

I always wondered how you'd do that - actually taking the top out of a tree while you're up it - the potential for mischief is self-evident. how do you avoid getting speared, thumped or pulled off the tree by it?

    loose cylinder bolts

Make sure you degrease the bolt holes and the bolts really well, or the loctite won't stick worth a rat's 4ss. I prefer angle tightening specs, as most cylinder heads call for these days. It makes allowance for grease, sealent etc on the threads which would allow a bolt to be over-tensioned...

    Makita/Dolmar or Huskies

The 357XP seems to be the weapon of choice for professional foresters round here as well. of course prices are high, nobody has to offer a discount on them for any reason. That said they're very agile and very powerful for their weight. I'd stump up the extra cash and go for one of these ;)...

    Whats the best rope?

^^ splicing a cable takes yards and yards of it. And you'll have your eye out before you get the eye in, so to speak. I'd got for three-strand rope for easy splicing, preferrably a nice soft nylon. hemp and natural fibre ropes are decent enough but I find they grip far too hard when tying a...

Has anyone mounted a broken 5100?

Hey, don't knock it 'til you've tried it. Could be worse, like that guy with the jam jar.

when did saws become more than tools to you?

When mains gas became more expensive than whiskey, and I pulled out my crappy gas fires. When I realised that people would thank me for taking away nuisance trees. When I saw my last gas bill go down by 90%. And every time I leave my boots by the fire in the evening so they're warm and dry in...

    home anodizing

^^ Also true. Alocrom 1200 works wonders under epoxy. It has a use-by date too, a number of aircraft specs seem to call for no more than 72 hours between treatment and painting. Not a lot of people seem to realise this and I used to be plagued with stuff that had been treated weeks ago, handled...

    home anodizing

Anodising isn't difficult, for small parts a car battery charger will do the necessaries. Another point is that the nasty finish it gives on castings may look terrible but it will do as a pretreatment for paint. Just omit the hot water sealing stage, leaving the surface porous so that the...

Am I stupid for doing this?

That's about the score - Aluminium piston, brass cylinder liner with chromium (or Nikasil) plating, making up to 3 bhp at 30,000 RPM. They're truly impressive for their size.

    Shelf Life for Sta-Bil?

Stabiliser going off. Ok. Sounds fishy.

    066 project saw

I'll survive, I'm within a mile of two stihl dealers, one of which is also a Husky dealer ... I have to go further to get wood to cut up.

    Automatic Mixture Control

There's two things at work - the pump set, driven off impulse puffs, and the metering diaphragm which allows fuel in from the pump until it reaches a certain level of overpressure relative to the air behind the diaphragm. Usually the back of the diaphragm is open to atmosphere, but the Dolmar...

Engine won't start without starting fluid

Check the valve clearances before you go tearing the motor apart. If the valves are sitting open it'll be a beast to start. A compression check with it still all in place will tell you a lot (before and after a dose of engine oil). Do this and report back :)

    Excellent! :D

    Husky 288xp clutch

fair enough :) Count the pegs on the old one, if it cut ok on that then stick with it. Short bar work on smaller wood, you could go up a peg with out too much difficulty as the 288 is a big old saw, if so you'll pick up a lot of speed. Or buy one of each and see how it goes, they aren't...

    Automatic Mixture Control

well, damaging a gasket under an air filter is basically wrong. If the carburettor sets fuel pressure based on what it can see at the intake, then if the filter is clogged fuel pressure will be reduced accordingly and all you'll get is a gradual reduction in power as the filter clogs up. On...
