    Saw position during idle time

I did replace the leaking cap. It's just something I started doing when the bad one was seeping.

    Saw position during idle time

When leaving my saws [Stihl 260 and 460] sit on the ground while doing other work I have been leaving the with the fill caps pointed up, with the saw on its side. I have done that in case the oil caps weep. Today the 460 didn't want to start once, after several periods of use, acting almost...

    Best chainsaw grinder

Does anyone have the Stihl HOS or USG?

    Best chainsaw grinder

    Who makes that grinder?

    Best chainsaw grinder

Do the grinders throw a lot of debris in all directions? Do I need to set up some sort of barrier around the machine to prevent getting abrasive in other areas of the shop?

    Best chainsaw grinder

I do not and will not buy Chinese crap. I value quality and precision in equipment. I own Stihl 460, 260, and 009 saws. Depends on the week; could be 30, could be none.

    Best chainsaw grinder

I know a significant number here are filing enthusiasts, and have a question for those who use grinders. What grinder do you think is the best, and why?

    Rope fitting question

I received a long piece of 5/8 Yale Polydyne. I am going to use it to tension trees to fell. No rigging, just tension. I will probably use a truck as the anchor point. Is there some commercial fitting that provides a larger radius than the neck of a hitch ball that would protect the rope...

    Bar oil and low temperature

At what temperature do you change to winter grade bar oil. I have some Stihl winter grade bar oil, and also recently purchased a gallon of their biodegradable oil. Has anyone tried that, and if so, what do you think of it?

    Loppers?

How are people sharpening these tools? ....including, how is the corner sharpened on the anvil tool?

    Loppers?

What are you meaning by ornamentals in this case? I am pruning hardwoods such as oaks, walnut, hickory, maple.

    Loppers?

Not saying I am right here, just an observation. Going through doing work I encounter both live and dead wood. I own both and have owned both, and it seems the bypass get left hanging from a branch somewhere because the anvil works better.

    Loppers?

I don't understand the bypass vs anvil, the suggestion that anvil is for dead stuff and bypass is for live stuff. I know nothing but what I have learned in 33 years of reforestation. Anvil good, bypass bad. I don't really care for how the bypass loppers work. The anvil type seems to work...

    Chipper features question

I have a lot of thinning of white pines to do, as in roughly 300-400. These trees are roughly 30 feet tall and about 10 inches at the base. In the past I have cut conifers down and left them lying on the ground for several years, then broken them up and scraped them off with a loader tractor...

    Entry level knot question

I have been working my reforestation project for over 30 years. Consequently, all my work is on the ground. I do now have some cottonwoods roughly 50-60 feet tall I want to drop in a number of places and intend to tension them [so they don't land on some better trees] with a long piece of 5/8...

    A conifer pruning question

So, take off 3/4 of the candle? Or is that too much? I don't know what you mean by the bug of the branch. When is the right time to do this?

    A conifer pruning question

By clipping off the candles, you mean completely?

    A conifer pruning question

I have roughly 6,000 trees in a reforestation project that is, other than thinning and fixing forked leaders as I can, left to develop in a natural state. I have some white pines and spruces along certain lanes and drives into this project. No surprise, they are beginning to encroach upon the...

Where to buy white pine trees from

Cascade Forestry in Cascade, Iowa, is a great source. I have purchased thousands of seedlings from them, and also utilized their planting and spraying service in reforestation projects.

    Black Walnut question

To echo another poster, the best thing is to plant them now, if you can. That is how nature does it.
