    Helmet Advice?

I'm sure it would be legal, but I don't relish the notion of trying to prove it if one of the many "eyes" questioned it. I want to draw as little attention to myself and my crew as possible until the insanity dies down. Mainly though, I sort of like the idea of having one self-contained...

    Helmet Advice?

Thanks for the reply. I think I'll give the Rockman a shot. A lot of reviews seem to complain about the adjusting mechanism falling apart though; have you ever had any trouble with yours? Like I said, it's looking like this is gonna be all day, every day use, at least until things calm down...

    Helmet Advice?

I know, this has been covered many times, and I've read many of those threads, but I'd still appreciate some input on my specific situation if you guys don't mind putting a few more whacks on this dead horse. Following a tornado at my workplace, OSHA and several other government agencies seem...

Correct sprocket for 290 with 3/8 chain?

I read this at the time and you settled my question, but I guess I never got back to say so. So... thanks! Also, it cuts just fine with the 3/8" / 7 pin sprocket, but the 460 has pretty well spoiled me and I don't use the 290 much anymore. Sorry to everybody else for dragging up...

066 Engine Cover/ Air Box Cover Question

My serial # is 151 621 580 so that would mean it *should* have round covers and the engine cover must have been replaced with the flattop at some point? The whole works is held together with the carb stud nuts as you describe. Any idea what year they changed over from flat to round? Thanks...

066 Engine Cover/ Air Box Cover Question

Yeah, the filter cover is the newer style, but there's not really any gap that I can see above the gas cap. Oh yeah, it has been, and will continue to be! :chainsaw:

066 Engine Cover/ Air Box Cover Question

I just bought this 066 from work when we replaced it with a new 660, and I was wondering about the mismatched flattop engine cover and roundtop air box cover. I've been combing Google images for an hour but I can't find a pic of one like this. Neither cover has been changed since I started...

    Who uses the chain brake?

Evidently I'm in the minority, but I always use the chain brake, particularly if I'm cutting around other people. It really doesn't take any particular effort once you get in the habit of using it, and I like having it locked when I'm not actively cutting. I don't even think about it at this...

Correct sprocket for 290 with 3/8 chain?

I have, and I didn't see one. I'm not sure anybody makes an 8 pin sprocket for the small spline drum (at least I haven't been able to find one). Maybe that's a sign... In that case, do you think I'd be better off just leaving it 8 pin .325? It has no trouble at all pulling that and it...

Correct sprocket for 290 with 3/8 chain?

This may be sort of dumb, but I've searched around and haven't found a good answer to my particular question. I needed to replace the sprocket on my 290 so I figured I'd convert it from the stock .325" "star" sprocket to a 3/8 rim sprocket for all the normal reasons (it will allow me to run the...

Old Homelite Won't Run Right... Need Help!

Finally got it running!! :greenchainsaw: The carb kit did the trick, and it runs GREAT now. Thanks to everybody for the advice! I also wanted to give props to Chainsawr.com where I got several of the parts. I saw their ad on this site, and figured I'd give 'em a try. I'm glad I did. They...

Old Homelite Won't Run Right... Need Help!

That's awesome! And it looks just like my saw (well, sort of...;)). How big a bar is that and what all did you have to do to the saw to get it to pull a bar that big? That sounds just like what it's doing, but I still don't get why it only does it after being run for a bit. Oh well, maybe...

Old Homelite Won't Run Right... Need Help!

That would make good sense but that's not it either. The new line is actually a little looser fit than I'd like (through the case). ID is the same as the original line, but I think the wall is a little thinner. That would make sense too, but the screen is clean. It wasn't too bad to start...

Old Homelite Won't Run Right... Need Help!

Yes, it certainly does act like that, but unfortunately that's not it. I cleaned out the tank vent very thoroughly and even ran the saw with the cap removed. It still did the same thing. And of course vibrated gas all over creation.

Old Homelite Won't Run Right... Need Help!

After it warms up or at least has been run for a minute and has started acting up, it will pretty much start right back up but it will need to be choked. If it is actually cold, it will start great, idle great, rev great, and cut perfect. This will last for maybe a minute or less, and it will...

Old Homelite Won't Run Right... Need Help!

I've got an old Homelite 150 (UT# 10432-B) that I'm trying to get running, but I'm having trouble... The magneto (or coil assembly or whatever the proper term is) had an intermittent open causing a no-spark situation most of the time, so I replaced that. The saw had also pretty much quit...

    Did I make a mistake?

I'd have to agree. One of our work saws is a 361 with a 24" bar, and it seems to suit the saw great. It balances well, reduces bending over, and doesn't seem to bog the saw down as long as the chain is sharp. Of course it's mainly our ground limbing saw so we rarely bury it, but if I could...

Personal story of a friend's serious felling accident (IL, about '99)

All good points, and I appreciate all the input and constructive criticism. It is true that other than the tree falling badly, the main cause of this was simply panic. When the tree started over in my buddy's direction, he didn't evaluate the situation, he just reacted instinctively (RUN!)...

Personal story of a friend's serious felling accident (IL, about '99)

Definitely. That's one of the techniques I adopted following this incident. If there is any question to the lean, condition, or surroundings of the tree, I'll get a log chain around it as high as I can and hook it to the 12,000 lb. recovery winch on my pickup. I know that's a little unusual...

Please critique my muffler mod (MS290)

Well, I'm about the last person around here qualified to give saw modification advice but I'm glad the pics helped. I got the camera for Christmas so I wanted to try it out anyway. :) Another update: I had the saw out today cutting hedge with a buddy who also has a 290, and I gotta say...
