Need some help w/ Homelite Super XL

I just bought a good running Super XL. What I am not sure is, what are the chain dimensions?? I am used to .325 on my 029 and I think the Super XL has 3/8, but cant really tell by looking at it. How much different is it to grind 3/8 versus .325? Thanks for any and all help, Mark

    Wanted: Homelite xl-12 type saw

I just bought one I just bought one and it runs great. (starts at first pull) It has a manual button on it for oiling, But I am told that it is also an auto oiler. All steel, red in color, Super XL, 16" bar. I may be convinced to sell it to fund getting another Stihl to replace the one...

What angle to grind for Ripping (.325)

Don't blast me for liking .325 before hearing me out. .325 is a narrower kerf (at least in my saws) and more teeth, so it will cut smoother and make it less able to take my hand off. Here is the deal, I am considering getting an alaskan mill. I would like to know what angle to grind my...

Did something Dum- straight gas into Stihl

OK Found a good fix I will be getting a jug and cylinder from the saw shop. I am trading some computer help for a discount. Am I correct in assuming that I will need to dissasemble the top end and get the tube (correct term?) that connects the piston to the conrod pressed in? Also, the...

Did something Dum- straight gas into Stihl

Ok, I did something really stoopid, I didn't pay attention and ran straight gas into both of my stihls. The cylinder and the piston is scored on each. To fix, am I correct that I would just need to get a new cylinder (jug?) and piston for each? I have the workshop manual and do pretty...

NEW Husky 3120XP $199 (Ebay Idiot)

Check this auction again This S.O.B. made his bidders private as well as his feedback. Only a low P.O.S. would make his bidders private unless he was selling something sensitive. he does not want his bidders to be alerted by good peopel like you and me that this guy is slime pure and simple...

    Poulan

I had a Poulan POS They are really disposable. Try to buy a coil for one. You will find that the coil costs half as much as the saw. Stihl is a good domestic made saw (Virginia Beach) and you can get really good ones for ~$300. Much better money spent than $150 on a Poulan. My Poulan...

    Economy chain grinders

Stuff on Farm Hey Tony, I have found much on my farm. The deer, I shoot a one or two a year and my neighbours and friends shot 4 or so between all of them and there still are too many. 4 foot tall rats, I say. I also found the merkels as well. They make good fried in batter or just...

    Economy chain grinders

Whoa Joker, off base totally!! I am not hyper eco sensitive by any means!. I still see cigarette butts on my farm from the person whom I bought it from 7 yeears earlier when he had crews logging. Not only is smoking dangerous to one's health (an everyine aw/in 25 feet) , it is a firehazard...

    Economy chain grinders

Dulling Chains Treeclimber, you must be in the trees alot and not in the ground that much where one may encounter wood that has sat in or on the ground after clearing with machinery. You must also cut much softer stuff than locust and hickory and cherry and apple. I have been cutting for...

    Economy chain grinders

Hand Filing? Three Strokes per tooth? I guess I saw a whole hell of a lot of hard stuff. I have been cutting for years and I have never been able to file a 20" chain in under 15 minutes, and certainly nowhere nears as precise and sharp as the grinder could do. After about 30 minutes, I...

    Economy chain grinders

I have the budget Oregon that says "made in Italy" and it looks exactly like the budget tecomec, but cheaper. It is $149 at Northern. By the time you sharpen 30 times at $5 a pop, you would have paid for the grinder. Also, filing by hand takes at least 20-30 minutes each (time is money)...

    log splitter

Splitting Hickory by maul is murder Hickory and Locust are the most prevalent hardwoods (other than soft poplar) around my parts. I am a big strapping dude, 6' 225#, not fat, and I found that splitting hickory with a number 8 or a monster maul to be outright sadism. The bark of the hickory is...

Commercial Cutters Direct is the way to go Commercial Cutters is where I order all of my chain, granted, I use premade loops because I really don't have the time to screw around with making my own. But, commercial cutters also sells reels. Premade 35lg81 (.325, 20", .063) for my Stihl runs...

How to take off external clutch to remove sprocket? Stihl 031

Great Idea!! Thanks tundraotto, I was turning the fool thing the wrong way. My impact wouldn't even budge it either way. So I put my buddie's impact on it and broke a corner back off of the nut. A good thing about Tundraotto's idea is that it does not use the nut surface but uses the...

    Sweet Gum For Firewood

I agree, Firewood is not as productive anymore And it certainly won't pay the mortgage, particularly when you live in a transition zone from high rural to medium city (Roanoke, VA). Everybody and their brother is sawing firewood here. It also funds my fun activities, and I do enjoy cutting...

How to take off external clutch to remove sprocket? Stihl 031

Hello all again, I am now attempting to remove the sprocket from my newly acquired 031AV. I have run into a snag; how do I remove the external clutch to be able to take off the sprocket assembly? The 029 I have is an internal clutch, so it is a different beast altogether. I removed the...
