    Shed drying

That would make it pretty tough to keep the splitter, snow blower and everything else secure doncha think? It gets warm enough in there with the windows closed as there is a flat ru ber roof. Ventilation is easy with all those windows, I was just tryin to make sure the air goes through the...

    Shed drying

My yard sucks for drying. Its got very little space. I have a 25x35 shed in the back I keep some lumber, snow blower etc in. There are 6 windows. If I added a couple of those turbine exhausts or a solar fan it should move air. My thought was connect 6" pvc to the exhaust with holes drilled in...

Electric wood splitters, where are they now?

 that was left there on purpose! To the OP, if you only go through a cord or two a year, what are the prices for wood in your area? I'm thinking it might be easier to just buy two cords. More expensive after a couple years, sure, but much less hassle. Around here a cord of hardwood...

    Barometric damper.

I agree. Many threads have been shat upon by this back n forth stuff. That said, I wish I could afford/justify a Yukon or Caddy. Either would be better than what I'm running now, but way out of my price range and not practical. I tend to ignore the argument fluff.

Electric wood splitters, where are they now?

is that even english? ;) I have been thinking about a small electric splitter for the basement. I start two fires a day generally, and that requires a ton of kindling, the sort that I can't just pick up off the ground when I'm done splitting. I've been using the hatchet/hammer process but...

    Barometric damper.

I ran one season with out a BD, and one season with. The season with gave me more consistent burning times (still crappy on a Hotblast tho). I hesitated to install one for the reason you listed - introducing cold air into the flue and creosote buildup. Not even an issue. I can still keep my...

Price check on a engine for my splitter

I'd go maybe $100. I lucked into a deal on a 13hp Honda that's been attached to a 48" blower. I'm fabbing a mount system for the ATV, but if that doesn't work out it's going on the splitter. I paid $100 for the whole rig.

dirt on the logs.don't want to dull the chain .. whats the best way to handle this?

Is the dirt all the way around the logs? Might be my imagination, but when dealing with one side that is dirty, I try to cut up from the clean side. My theory is that the bark will fling the dirt off before the chain actually gets to it. It's just a theory though :D

    Splitter Auto-Stop doesn't work

I had problems last year with mine not kicking out at the end of the return stroke. I pulled the end cap off the valve and put some grease on it. Worked fine ever since.

How often do you clean your chimney?

Just cleaned mine today. 6" flexible liner. I got about a gallon of fluff out of it. Last time I cleaned it was before heating last fall. 25' liner. Most of my wood is about 3/4 seasoned and I only went though about 3 cords last year.

    forced draft fan

I work between 8 and 12 hours a day, usually 8. But I'm the only one at the house. I work 3rd, so I make a fire when I get home to a cold house, and by 10-11 it's warmed up. I get up for work about 8pm and have to start the process again. I might buy a bag of pellets and see how those work...

    forced draft fan

I was thinking I could set the limit by the flue temp. turn it on at 300, off at 400. That would keep it from overfiring. I did try running it last winter with the rear plug removed, and didn't much care for the lack of control and went back to just using the ashpan door. But yeah a better...

    forced draft fan

I have a Hotblast 1300. It heats my little house pretty well. However I'm sick of having to start fires twice a day. When I get home in the morning, and when I wake up at night. You can figure about 30 minutes from opening the door to getting some heat out of it. Granted, it's a cheap furnace...

    Some kinda wasp?

Come to think of it, after reading a bit about them, this is what was infesting the beech that I brought home a couple years ago. Except the wood was much closer to punky and 9/10ths of the larvae were already dead or frozen. Glad this tree was taken down before it got to that point.

    Some kinda wasp?

yep pretty much. I google image searched giant wasp but didn't come up with much that looked close.

    Some kinda wasp?

I started hauling a beech that a friend had cut down. It's in pretty good shape for a beech, it seems only the center was rotted a little way up. In the process of splitting it, I found this monster Crappy cell phone pics but it's all I've got. It was burrowed into pretty solid wood...

    does elm mold easily?

There's no place to move it to, so it's just gonna have to work itself out :D I have it stacked only two rows on the pallets so there's still a fair bit of sun and wind from any direction other than the south should circulate a fair bit. Even the stuff that was laying out in the field was in...

    does elm mold easily?

I noticed a stack had tipped over next to the shed this morning. I also noticed that there is a lot of spots on it. I know the drying location (north side of shed) isn't ideal, but I had several cords of ash stacked there for 2 years and it never molded. Does elm mold more easily than...
