    Bailey's Customer Service

Yeah, they are really good folks. They even offered to back up a 044BB kit failure that I bought on ebay. I didn't even buy it from them, yet they were willing to step in and help if I wanted it. That's pretty damn cool..

MS660 clutch visual wear inspection? (picture)

Thanks! That's exactly what I was looking for. It seems to pass the test, so I'll give it a try.

MS660 clutch visual wear inspection? (picture)

Is there something I should be looking at on the clutch shoes/drums for what's considered too worn or not? I was cleaning up some parts and got to looking at the clutch shoes. After a good cleaning, I noticed there there is some rough like material in the middle of each shoe, but the outer...

    My 044 -> 046BB rebuild worklog

Just thought I'd post a little update. I finally got a chance to go run my saws on a decent wood cutting trip. I took the MS290, the 044/046BB, and the 066BB. This 044>046BB is the saw I'm going to keep. It has almost as much power as my 066BB saw does, but it's much snappier and ALOT...

Crappy Stihl Cylinder - Looks like ChiCom Garbage!!!

Yeah, I still don't understand the cost of Stihl parts. I've recently been working on rebuilding a Yamaha Banshee and I'm amazed at how much more I can get for my money. Stuff like $45 for one crank bearing and $14 for a little muffler gasket for my 066 just makes me sick. There's no reason...

    044 Woes

If you're going to go BB, may as well go with an 046BB kit and have some fun with it. I'm really enjoying mine, I may just have to sell off the rest so I can do another one.:)

    066 project saw

Ouch, that may be a bad dealer. I've bought two different good used ones on ebay now for somethinglike $6 plush $2 shipping. It's not really a part that wears out like other stuff, so used works for me. Anyhow, unfortunately some dealers just don't like to sell parts or repair as much as...

    Crank/rod bearings... what's good & what's no so good

What about checking a crank for any bending of the rod. I have a spare crank, but my new MS660 project appears to have a shattered piston skirt on the exhaust side that appears to be due to debris in the compression chamber. I don't know how they managed, but there are wood chips stuck to the...

    066 project saw

Yeah if you can't find a good helpful dealer, Baileys will order OEM stihl parts for you over the phone, but you have to call them and place the order on the phone. I might just do that for my next order to see how it goes. So far I've been really happy with my aftermarket stuff from them...

Impact wrenchs are no no for chainsaws

I frequently use and impact wrench, it's all about understanding the power of the tool and appropriately respecting that power without abusing it. I chaulk it up to user error and hopefully a lesson learned.

    Best looking muffler mod ever:)

That was a really good deal.:rockn:

    064 Clutch removal

I've had to use my large impact wrench/socket on both of the 066 flywheels I've pulled. Although, you need to be careful doing that, one of them I got carried away and sheared the woodruff key right off..:jawdrop: Anyway, the impact wrench always takes care of business for me and you don't...

Break in time for rings to seat

I've always treated my bike rebuilds and saw rebuilds alike. Do a couple of short warm up/cool down cycles at the very beginning and more than anything, just make sure it's not running lean. Then just use them normally, but don't abuse them at WOT for extended periods of time. Every...

    Stihl 440

Yeah, I second the carb needle. Buy a walbro HD kit if that's the carb you've got and install it. They are only a few bucks and most dealers carry those in stock. You could try to just pull the carb apart and clean it, but I find it hard to keep the gaskets in good shape without tearing...

I messed up today on an 044.

If you can find a used tank that's good locally, that would be awesome. They are hard to buy on ebay, good ones will go for over $100 there. Sounds like it's still go plenty of potential especially if you got some sources for good used parts.

MS440 running rough and stalling out

Sorry to see that, but it appears it's time for a tear down. Looks like the piston and rings at least need a replacement. You never know on the cylinder until you've got it apart and try cleaning up any aluminum transfer that may or may not be stuck on there.

    Frustrations Rebuilding a 440

It wasn't fun for me when I pulled the muffler on my 044 build and found pieces of piston rings either, but in the end I figured it out, learned alot from the little mishap, and the saw runs great now. When you split the case did you replace the bearings/seals? It seems like I read...

How did you get started on working on saws

I just can't stand to pay for someone to work on my stuff if it means missing some sort of learning opportunity while saving money. Had an MS290 for several years cutting wood, never took a thing apart short of an occasional clutch cleaning. The time came that I wanted a slightly bigger saw...
