How hot does your wood stove get?

Ice dams like that are a indication of attic problems, I had issues with ice dams (nowhere near as bad as the ones in the pic). Here is what I did, air sealed all around in the attic, added soffit vents and insulation baffles, and more insulation. Use a roof rake to remove snow, problem solved...

Has anyone had their firewood kiln dried?

My wood "supplier" kiln dries, removes the bark and cuts it into nice rectangles all for free.;) But seriously if you can find a place giving away pallets like this, mostly oak (sheet metal co. near me) it makes very good fire wood, as good or better than regular cordwood. Just cut to length...

drilling through bar for oil feed

Chainsaw bars are quite hard, a standard drill bit wont cut it. Try one of these, carbide topped die drill. (They come in several sizes) A carbide tipped masonry drill may work. Use a drill press if possible.

    Electric log splitters

I picked up this one on CL for $65, needed some TLC to get running well. Modded the handle for one hand operation. You can speed up your splitting a lot by making different length return stop blocks to match the length of you wood. For what they are they work quite well, you can split some...

    Picking a woodstove

I have a BK Ashford 20 (1.8 CF fire box) I am very happy with, it heats my 1100 SF ranch nicely, almost never have to run the oil boiler:). It can provide usable heat for 8-12 hrs on a lower thermostat setting. I loaded the stove about 12 hrs ago and there are still nice red coals, and the...

    Bring on the Zombies

    090 handle hose?

I used closed cell vinyl foam grips from McMaster Carr n(searchRound Grips with Open Ends), for my Homlite handle. Reasonably priced around $2.50/ft. Has a good feel, and reduces vibration.

    Woodstove vs. Pellet Stove

I have had wood stoves for about 20 yr, always was able to get wood for free. Only use about 10 gal of oil/yr. Never had a pellet stove. Plugged in some numbers in a fuel cost calculator. oil @ $2.00/gl, nat [email protected]/therm, pellets @ $250/ton, seems average for my area. The results...

    let's see your firewood dog!

Great pics everyone! Here are some pics of Minna, she is a GSD/Husky mix. We got her form a local rescue, who got her from a shelter down south. Has one blue eye and one yellow with a sliver of blue in it. Loves to sit in front of the stove.:surprised3:

Convert small electric splitter to gas?

I picked up a used electric splitter on CL real cheap. They work surprisingly well for what they are. For me they are faster than splitting by hand and a lot less tiring. Also they don't make much noise. It will handle most of what I needed to split, except the really notty stuff. As others...
