    Harman TL300 Operation

This is normal when you get a good AB kickoff. If you feel near the vent when it is doing this it produces more heat. No I have never opened the lid when this is happening as it would cause the flame path to be changed to the new air opening. If it is shooting flames out of the lid when the...

    Even small cuts are dangerous

The scary thing is, "according to his family" the nick that he received didn't even require a bandaid. The saw must have been off or stopping at the time it happened or it would have caused more damage. Lastest news is he will be in the hospital till around Christmas. They are planning...

    Even small cuts are dangerous

My BIL cut his knee with the chainsaw over a week ago. He didn't do much damage and he really didn't think nothing of it, just a nick. He cleaned it and went about his business. After a few days the injury got infected and he was septic. Over the weekend they had to due emergency surgery on...

what a wood stove is really made for

If you do cut registers in your floor make sure you install the fire vent ones that close when exposed to high heat, else if you have a fire in the basement the vents will suck the smoke and the fire into the upstairs. I had one installed in my house, they are spendy but if they give me that...

Installing wood stove this weekend. Need tips

My tips, would be to follow the manufactures instructions on clearances and use their numbers as a min value. Aka: If the manual says it has to be 20" from anything flamable do not make it 19" make it at least 20". Make sure that you have adaquate chimney height and that there are no draft...

    Heating the whole house...

Since you want a more even heat I would suggest something in soapstone that has cat.

    Stupid elm.....Never again

Since my 34 ton Swisher splitter's ram does not go far enough to split the log, I use a piece of scrap lumber to make up the difference. This allows the ram to fully go through the log.

Does wood burning affect allergies or asthma much?

I also have severe allergies and asthma. For me my asthma has been far less active since I have been burning wood. My forced air propane furnace really caused me issues, since it blows around the dust and mold. I do have to be careful of how much wood I stored in the basement. But, as long...

Refurbishing and older wood stove or ?

I would stay away from Craigslist or Ebay stoves. Reasons: 1) You do not know what you are getting, there could be unknown damage to the stove that could cause serious issues 2) Cost of repair 3) Time to repair 4) Price, when you add the cost of the stove, + the materials to repair it, +...

    Well crap...

Is that like the old Timex commercials? Takes a Licking and keeps on Ticketing... What happens when an elephant steps on a Timex?

Troy Bilt log splitter cylinder issue.

Does Swisher splitters also have this issue?

    Cast or Steel

Steel Stove 1) Convention Heat tends to be able to heat a wider area then a cast 2) Less maintenance then a cast stove stove it typically formed as one piece instead of separate pieces. 3) Not as pretty as a cast stove Cast Stove 1) Radient Heat 2) May need to be rebuilt over time due...

    Who is still burning

Yup had a frost advisory last night, and also have one for tonight. Been getting into the low 40's to upper 30's most nights. But, we have been getting some sun, so that has been warming the place into the 70's during the day. May have to light the stove again tonight for a quick burn. Basement...

Bought and installed new Englander NC30

I would always go with what the manufacture recommends if not you WILL have issues. As for your damper it is really not needed with these EPA model stoves. It may do more to create creosote then anything. Some people still use them but it would really depend on your setup aka too much draft...

    More rain this weekend

+googleplex on that one. I was hoping to finsh my kids swingset this weekend. Looks like I will not be able to work on on it till wednesday or thursday. My wood, I may get to it in June. I am glad we cut and split around 6 cords of oak last year for backup or I really would be up the creek.

Advice on the Upcoming heating season, stove options

Racer, what I would do is first cut the heat loss from the place by increasing insulation. This is a relatively cheap option and will allow you time to save more money to get an EPA style stove that will get long burn times and use less wood. On your basement, is it a block or poured...

    Need Help Mice

The best mouser I had on my place was a fox. It kept them under control. Haven't seen the fox for a while now and the mice are back. I do not know why people hate foxes so much I have a chicken coop and it didn't seem to care about them or the wild birds in my area. But, give a cat a chance...

    Poplar

I am burning mostly poplar right now. Getting over 8 hour burn times with it in my TL300. Now if I was using oak I would be getting 12+, but it burns it lets off heat and it is keeping the propain guy away.
