Lube of the Needle Bearings under the Clutch Drum

I checked my Dad's 066 just before I sold it, and only the cage was there, not the bearings. The shaft was clean and no gouges or abnormal wear. I kept the saw opened up and let the buyer ( friend of mine) inspect it before I put it back together with a new bearing and a dab of grease. He was...

    Taking down the chain rakers

I think a CBN wheel will certainly do the job but I've reverted to hand filing the depth gauges, some times with a 2 in 1 file and other times with a file o plate or a Husky gauge as someone pictured earlier. I'd really like a filing gauge for Stihl chain that is as simple as the Husky gauge in...

cant get chips instead of sawdust while cutting

Well it seems like the OP is getting some chips, but not big ones. Send us pics of the sharpened chain. That red oak is some tough stuff. A 70 cc class saw might be in your future. I buck red oak with an 046 mag and a 20" bar, with RS chain.

    046 has me stumped

That carbon may be the only reason my compression is 162 lol .

MS261 hard to start in -15° weather

I'd let it warm up well before putting it in wood that cold too.

    046 has me stumped

Many thanks guys for the advice and your interest in helping me solve the problems. Today I got most of the saw back together. New pawls and new compression release valve installed. I have pulled the starter cord at least 30 - 40 times and it has yet to lock up. The pawls don't look to be...

Nope, but thanks for the suggestion.

    046 has me stumped

I hope that will be the case. The guy behind the counter pulled out a new piston and it didn't have a hole. But I bet you are correct. The hole is a little too perfect looking. Thanks for taking the time to point that out! Maybe pistons made in the 90's for that saw used a locating hole...

    046 has me stumped

Well, I'm the second owner so something could have happened like that before I bought it. I know it needs the compression release valve, so I'll put that in along with new pawls, and I'll look at that flywheel. The interesting thing is that the saw was still running. Would you run it till it...

    046 has me stumped

I don't recall seeing any. I think I would have noticed discoloration from that.

    Greasability on clutch bearings

I checked the clutch bearing on my Dad's 066 .and found no needles, just the plastic cage in place. I don't think he even knew there was a bearing in there. The crankshaft was great, so I installed a new bearing with grease and it was fine.

    046 has me stumped

My 25 year old Stihl 046 mag has started occasionally locking up when I try to start it. I usually get about 6" of cord pulled before it stops. But it will free up and then start normally and run great. I pulled the recoil starter and everything seems to be in great shape, although I am going...

    Husky 257 chain catcher screw

Wow! Thanks for all the responses. I have the one that does not mount through the AV mount. But I think I found a solution. I keep a couple bolts and lock nuts for mounting the bucking spike on my 046 in case it works loose in the field. The bolt, although slightly longer, threaded into...

    Husky 257 chain catcher screw

Working on the saw for a friend and realized the screw holding the chain catcher won't tighten up. I'm reluctant to use a bigger or longer screw because of the risk of damaging the crankcase. What's the best fix for this? Thanks.

    Husqvarna 257 clutch brake

Hi guys, I'm trying to get a Husky 257 back into service for a friend of mine, and the clutch brake lever seems to be frozen up. I could barely remove the clutch cover from the saw, but when I did get it off I noted the saw had not been cleaned in a long time under there. I have scraped out a...

MS461 carb adjustment: RPM too high on full throtle

Make sure the chain is properly tensioned to begin with. Also, it could well be you are at the limiter on the H adjustment screw. But I wouldn't worry too much about it turning 13,800. On some saws I have pulled the H limiter cap, rotated it 1/4 turn clockwise, and then put it back on...

    Stihl MS 250's

I've worked on a few of these saws for friends, and although I'm no mechanic, the tried and true start procedure from cold seems to be 2 pulls on full choke, then switch to half choke to start it. More than two pulls on full choke will flood it whether or not it pops. Set the carbs to standard...

Going to potentially purchase a Stihl 039 tomorrow.

I still have an 039 that I bought probably 15+ years ago off of CL. It was my main saw until I picked up a used 046 mag. I currently have a 20" bar on it and ran it 2 weeks ago. My BIL's 034 muffler rusted through and finally came off while cutting, so I handed him the 039 and I kept going...

How To Clean Your Chainsaws Without Making a Mess

I keep a small synthetic paint brush with my other tools in the field, and everytime I stop cutting to change out a dinged chain or to get gas / oil, I brush off the clutch cover and the crankcase underneath it, along with the fuel and oil cap areas of the saw. When I get home, I drag out my...

    stihl 039 bar

I don't know about the green icon you describe, but I run 3/8 pitch x .050 on my 039. I think Stihl pretty much encourages low kickback chain on all homeowner saws. You can use either low kickback or not, so long as the pitch, gauge, and number of drive links match. Someone will chime in with...
