best skidding and truck combo for firewood operation

Hermann, Thanks a bunch for the detailed information. I appreciate that you took the time to share your knowledge and experience to help me out. I think I will take your advice....it is logical and it is right on with others opinions posted for this question. I think I will try to find a...

best skidding and truck combo for firewood operation

That dump my buddy had was sold (my typical luck) --but maybe for the better as I think it needed a bit of work. I think a 3/4 ton with a trailer would be good as I could leave the trailer if need be. Although a dump bed would be sweet-----but I think a dump trailer would suffice. So many...

best skidding and truck combo for firewood operation

Thanks Tom....that's exactly what I want to do and your setup may be exactly what I go with as I have other uses (e.g., horses) to justify the expenditure on the equipment too. As others have mentioned here, a pu would be easier to maneuver in the woods. A cord of wood here in RI is about...

    440/460 vs. 372--another Husky vs. Stihl ?

so what are you guys saying........that the Dolmar 7900 is an awesome saw and is the way to go?

best skidding and truck combo for firewood operation

Thanks for the input. I have been thinking about it and I think I may go with a used tractor in the 40+hp range, as I can use it for more than just wood toting. Plus the initial cost won't be all too bad. As for a truck, you all bring up good points. A friend of mine has an old dodge 1 1/2...

    440/460 vs. 372--another Husky vs. Stihl ?

whoa.....so much fighting:p Although I should have known the response such a post would create. Not to get off the subject (which is easy to do), those Dolmars seem pretty nice. I am just a little leary of buying one as I don't think there are any dealers here in RI. I emailed DD a while back...

    440/460 vs. 372--another Husky vs. Stihl ?

thanks...I appreciate your advice. I agree with you that maintenance is key.....but from what I gather there are certain quirks associated with some saws that aren't problems with others. I believe in doing my homework, gathering most of my info from the knowledgeable people on this site who...

    440/460 vs. 372--another Husky vs. Stihl ?

Wow...those are some good prices! Have you or anyone you know ordered from that shop? I hear the 372 rips.....not to say the Stihls don't but there seems to be many of the opinion that while Husky has problems (related to the new parent company "selling out" to Lowes, etc), Stihl is having...

    440/460 vs. 372--another Husky vs. Stihl ?

Sorry to post another "what saw should I buy" question, but I need some pro advise. I thought I had my mind made up on a Husky 372, but I stopped at a local Stihl dealer today (mistake) and looked at the 440 and 460. He indicated that he did not stock the 440 as it is not in high demand (at...

best skidding and truck combo for firewood operation

I am thinking about cutting and selling firewood part time. I was wondering what kind of truck or skidding equipment any of you who do this kind of work would use for a part time operation. I obviously don't want to spend a ton of $$, as it is just a part time job. I was thinking about a...

    proper procedure for filing rakers

Thanks guys, I think I am on the right track. I will look at the chain--I know there is a scribe mark on the cutter but I do not remember seeing one on the raker--but I'll check. Thanks again.

    proper procedure for filing rakers

I started filing the rakers on my chain this weekend, and realized that I really was not sure how to do it as I have never done it before. I used a raker depth gauge to determine which ones (all of them actually!) needed filing and found it easiest to advance that cutter to the front (i.e. tip)...

Can cold weather ruin a saw?

well, from the sounds of things I am not the only one experiencing problems resulting from the cold temps. All I can say is that I hope it warms up soon. Why would one saw be problematic and another not?

Can cold weather ruin a saw?

i have been cutting in the snow but not "in the snow". I have been trying to not set the saw in the snow but maybe because it has been so cold everything is froze. I will check to see if there is any junk frozen inside. I am sure there is--if so, what can I do to prevent that? :confused...

Can cold weather ruin a saw?

maybe i will see if i can get winter bar oil and if not, try cutting mine with diesel. I guess my problem may be the result of the oil being nonviscous which causes added resistance (??). I am interested if anyone else has had this problem.

Can cold weather ruin a saw?

thanks tony.....so it's not only me then, huh? I think I remember reading something on here about burning out the oiler on some saws that oil at idle. I hope that didn't or doesn't happen to me. What would you thin the bar oil out with?

Can cold weather ruin a saw?

Lately the temperature has been around or below freezing. I store my chainsaw and fuel/bar oil in an unheated garage and I have noticed that the bar oil has been really "thick". When I can finally get my saw to run it takes a few minutes before the chain will turn. WHen I give it gas it...

    Leftover husky 55?

Brent, You are probably more likely to find one at a smaller shop. I haven't run across one on the net since I found mine earlier this year--apparently I bought one of the last from Miller's. IMO the plain old 55 is nicer than the new rancher b/c it has the compression release and a little...

    Leftover husky 55?

Brent, I bought a 55 (not rancher) earlier this spring from http://www.millersaws.net in North Carolina. I dont' know if they have any more but it is worth a try. Let me know how you make out.
