Anyone burn standing dead elm trees

I burn mostly dead elm, it will make for a hot fire and as some have said not too many coals left but mix in some oak or hickory and then theres plenty of coals. Elm does require a log splitter on the bigger pieces, it's really stringy and knarley.

Has anyone's OWB had a meltdown

I ran mine at 140 when i got it and found out that the water jackets will sweat below 145 that is why they recommend running at 175 or 180, soooo i turned mine back up and now it turns on at 160 and shuts down at 175...

Has anyone's OWB had a meltdown

This is what i use to watch the temperature, don't laugh it works good! Just zip tie the probe on your pex pipe coming in and wrap it with a little insulation, then take the remote and set it on top of the fridge or wherever, mine is set so the alarm would go off if the temp gets to 185...

    Big log Splitter!!!!

It would be a lot faster with a 4" cylinder, but use what ever ya have i guess...

Just curious if this is Elm?

If the maul bounces off....then it is probably Elm. Stringy as heck if you do get it split, about need a log splitter.

Has anyone's OWB had a meltdown

You're setup is different than mine, i don't have any pressure relief valves, my boiler has a 3 inch pipe that sticks up through the top of boiler with a rubber cap and a float valve so i can see if the water level is full, it is essentially open to the atmosphere. When the aquastat failed...

Has anyone's OWB had a meltdown

Possible? Yea... when the aquastat does not shut down the draft blower when the boiler reaches the desired temperature it's gonna boil water out the vent until it runs out of wood...

Has anyone's OWB had a meltdown

I had the Aquastat fail on mine and boiled out about 10 gallons of water, I turned it down to 140 and it would still heat the water to 175, so i called and Natures Comfort sent me a new one and all is well now...

    OWB's and lotsa wood.

The nearest i can figure is that my OWB burns maybe 20% more than the wood furnace in the basement when it is cold. Also heating the domestic hot water, and getting 12 to 14 hour burn times. I have burnt wood for years, the OWB is the best investment i have ever made, i would hate to go back...

Caution when using an OWB (A.K.A. "Who Needs a Barber?)

Yea, ya gotta watch out for the smoke too, I use a garden hoe to move the wood around after tossing it in...

Home owners insurance is going replacing my OWB

You could even sell the old one to somebody that would fix it up. Also you should reconsider hooking up the domestic hot water, it doesn't take much to plumb it up and it's a really nice feature with the OWB, I believe that mine is saving me around 30 a month on electricity...

CL 5036 OWB settling a small amount

I wouldnt think that small amount would hurt anything, those pex lines will flex quite a bit when their hot.

    How does your Dolmar/Makita oil?

I've never had any trouble with my 6400 oiling, or any of my Dolmars.

    Any one herd of this?

Maybe they made the chain a link or 2 too long to begin with and now its out of travel?

    Just out of curiosity

I have a Natures Comfort NC250, I can get 12 hours burn time, I am using seasoned oak and red elm. Heating an old 2 story farm house that is insulated well and hot water too.

    My non-expert Dolmar/Makita observations

I have 5 Dolmars and none of them have ever leaked bar oil, and they get used hard, not sure what you have going on there?

    OWB and eating wood

Yea....bad door gasket will definitely increase wood consumption, as it lets air in and fuels the fire. They recommend spraying door gasket periodically with WD40.

    Outdoor Wood Burner Advice

I've only had mine installed for a week now but i love it, It's a Natures Comfort NC250, not sure who makes their heat exchangers but it is the way to go if your burning wood! The hot water is very nice too. I can have the house at virtually any temp i want, and I get 12 to 15 hours burn...
