Christmas Giveaway - Arborist Site Decal Giveaway

While it's bittersweet to have inherited my Dad's saws nearly a year ago, every time I use them it's like he's still around. And that's a good thing. :)

Husky 359 with Big Oil Leak (Pics inside)

It's this one I'm looking for, right? (p/n 537101102) https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/71BiieANvoL._SL1500_.jpg Just wondering if I should do this one and others that might come in a kit?

Husky 359 with Big Oil Leak (Pics inside)

I just picked up a Husky 359 for $160. It runs, but leaks significantly right away. I power-washed it to help find the leak. Pics below are after it ran for all of about two minutes. Do we think this fix will do the trick?

Why can't I sharpen my chain!?

Holy cow, sharp chains matter! Finally got a chance yesterday to try out my "new" chain. Damn thing cut through oak like it was a balsa wood! Thanks Phil!

    $20 Husky 55 Restoration

Well, I punted. I saw what "parts" chainsaws were going for on eBay, listed this one yesterday afternoon, and two hours later it was sold for $75. Then I promptly purchased a lightly used Husky 359 on eBay for $248 shipped. I'm happy with how this all played out. Although it would have...

    $20 Husky 55 Restoration

Will a shot in from the exhaust port suffice, or should I disassemble and get a good pic of the piston once the cylinder is removed?

Okay, got it. One of these... https://www.amazon.com/Oregon-18720-7-Tooth-Small-Spline/dp/B000IBWVWG

    $20 Husky 55 Restoration

Huh? Not sure I follow. As to the cause, I'm guessing it's had a lot of hard use and/or straight gasoline used and/or bad mixture. The piston is a little scored up. I can see that several of parts were replaced, so I suspect it's had a lot of hours on it overall.

    $20 Husky 55 Restoration

I was sorta half looking for a second Husky, if only to have as a "hot standby" when I frag a chain and need to finish a job. A "parts only" 55 showed up on Craigslist, and it was mine shortly thereafter for $20. Compression is 30 psi, so clearly it needs a rebuild. I see 45 and 46mm kits...

Why can't I sharpen my chain!?

Thanks for all you do Phil! Relative to the leading corners getting abraded, did that likely occur from the wood I was cutting or some sort of misalignment with the saw?

Why can't I sharpen my chain!?

Funny enough, I temporarily "gave up" and sent the chain to Phil two days ago! In the mean time I've ordered a raker filing guide. I'll be sure to study the chain once I have it back from Phil and post some pics. Thanks for all the help.

Why can't I sharpen my chain!?

Thanks for the suggestion. Now that I really need to take a big swing at this chain I am considering some sort of grinder. Did you also consider the Harbor Freight grinder?

Why can't I sharpen my chain!?

I do already have one of those in addition to the hand-held Grandberg. I do struggle every time with setting up the Grandberg. Maybe it's not for someone like me who doesn't do this often enough.

Why can't I sharpen my chain!?

Okay, back from vacation. I see y'all have continued to carry on without me! :) Any way, I've confirmed here's what I have: ArborPro 18" bar and chain combo with .325 pitch and .050 gauge chain (WoodlandPro), requiring a 3/16" round file.

Why can't I sharpen my chain!?

Hmmm, I was going by an old post to figure out what I had since I couldn't right away find the box. Maybe I changed my mind. Need to research more.

Why can't I sharpen my chain!?

Yes, 3/8". Thanks for the guidance. I'll setup the Grandberg with a new file and go to town, and only then I'll drop the rakers down with a gauge. I'll report back in a week or so with results. BTW, used to run to Mexico from SUCO for my long runs back in the early 80's. Invariably I'd have...

Why can't I sharpen my chain!?

Granberg file guide. But now I understand that I could sharpen the cutter perfectly and if the rake is in the way it won't matter. Thanks for the offer to sharpen the chain. I might take you up on it, but I'll try sharpening it myself first so that I can learn.

Why can't I sharpen my chain!?

Yes, I do know to flip the bar, but certainly not with EVERY chain sharpening. I will pick up a raker gauge.

Why can't I sharpen my chain!?

Looking at this pic, it would appear that the raker should be about 2/3rds the height of the cutter. Is that a good eyeball value to shoot for if I'min the field? It appears that you've taken a couple angled passes at the raker after shortening it. Is that the "more correct" way to file...

Why can't I sharpen my chain!?

Sorry for the delayed reply - I was expecting an e-mail notification when anyone replied - and that never showed up. Good thing I checked in here today regardless. I've attached a couple pics of my chain after yesterday's brief sawdust creation. Seeing as how I've never touched the rakers...
