    Fire starting concaucsions??

We use the fire starter bricks:msp_scared: But we cut them into 4 pieces so its pretty cheap. 3 chunks of wood in a pyramid and one of the chunks in the middle starts every time.

    chainsaw only?

I've thought the same thing, chainsaws are very expensive HP for milling. But they are compact and have the clutching and bar oiling built in so its easy to stick one on the end of an alaskan mill. It would be some engineering involved to get a vertical shaft lawnmower engine to work but...

    2 Stihl 090's 50" bar White Ash

What chain were you running to bog two 090's? I guess with two guys its easy to lean into the saws alot.

Freehanding or any CS milling You can't be too careful.

I guess he could have bucked the log up beside his foot if he wasn't near people, but he's lucky he didn't get his leg broken. I've got a big log that I want to get a slab out of, and this is a good reminder to block it before I get ripping...

I like it, although I assume your woodlot must not have alot of hills? Anyways if my ATV is still pulling a load like that in 25 years I'll be very happy!

    1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Would an I6 grand cherokee get better mileage than a pickup anyways? I've got an '03 Tracker which gets the rare 30mpg tank if its all highway, but normally gets mid 20's or low 20's in the winter. I do tow with it quite a bit, but its only rated for 1500lbs and I find with 2000+lbs...

Anyone Use the Good Ole Splitting Maul anymore

I just use a 6lb maul for my 3 or 4 cords a year. It always starts, never runs out of gas, it fits in the front box on my atv, and I use it to split the big ones in the woods to save my back. I noodle a bit too, for the knotty chucks or crotches.

    ATV versus UTV??

So does your land need a 4wd vehicle to get to your firewood? Due to hills or wetspots? I use my old 2001 300 kingquad atv (has front dif lock, and 15 forward gears) for my firewood and my next step would be to go to a 4wd compact tractor. IMHO a UTV isn't enough of an upgrade as a firewood...

New Fiskar's SS with long handle

If a 36" handle is nice, this must be better! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2WlwE4LV-0&NR=1 Seriously though, I might pick up a 36" one, I like to split on the ground with out bending over too much. And I can see the logic in going to a lighter head. Its sort of like picking a...

I got called a Firewood Bandit

That stinks, was he not in a position to refuse their offer and drive home? I have 2 monster ash trees down that would be good canidates for slabs (40" and 44" dbh) and offered them up to a member here, but he doesn't pay for wood... Well the way I see it is that all hardwood at my place is...

Looking to get more out of my stove

Do you close the damper off at the end of a burn? Otherwise it will be WO with no fire and pulling cold air into your house from somewhere. I notice this with our woodstove in our house atleast. Also I think longer burns and more heat output are kind of mutually exclusive. Hotter fire box...

Any tricks to getting a longer burn time?

My firebox is basically square in my regency F2400, so normally we load with the ends facing the glass, but for a longer burn we load sideway with the ends facing the sides. This lengthens the burn time quite a bit and we can keep enough coals in the morning to start splits without kindling...

    The Official "Buckin'" Thread

Oh, I thought you were doing all fancy cuts to show what you'd do in the woods to avoid splitting or fiber pull on valuable logs. For big firewood I just over buck and then cut down if the tension is on top, of course this sometimes splits the bottom off but its fire wood...

Would you say wood heat is GREEN?

How about a plan for a business that designs and installs masonary wood stoves? My buddy has one and its the best way to burn wood in a well insulated house IMO. Fire it up once a day or every couple days if its not cold and it keep their house warm easily.

    The Official "Buckin'" Thread

So when do you use that cut? Compression on top and tension on the bottom? I saw a pro do something similar during a horse logging demo, and I'm pretty sure it was a compression on top cut, but it was years ago.:dizzy:

Stihl 290 a good choice for homeowner?

My buddy has had a 290 for a year, we did some cutting together and the saw wasn't very happy. For some reason it wasn't oiling the bar (even with a clear oil hole)and it just seemed way to lean, my 372 should cut quicker but not 3 times faster in 16" wood... Anyways I've never regretted...

    changing woodstove pipe. how often?

Maybe you are overfiring the stove and burning all the paint off? I've got a double wall pipe right off the stove with the inside pipe being stainless steel of some sort which isn't rusting in the 5 years we've been using it so far. Might be worth switching too?

    Splitting job finally over (WOOHOO)

So do they actually burn wood? Or just like to have some peasants working the estate:) I used to work for a doctor when I was a teenager, who did his own firewood just for fun and the exercise and an excuse to have a tractor. He had a bad leg so I'd go up and down into the tractor to drive it...

    My tri-axle load

I've got a few ideas on how to break it down and I don't have a splitter so the plan is to split/rip it right there at least into pieces I can lift. Both trees are 150 yards from the house so its going to be a winter project to get myself in shape as well. I've thought about renting a saw...
