    Ever buy something cheap

Coated gloves in my experience still outlast leather by many margins. I can roach any leather glove you give me in less than a day splitting and loading wood. The coated ones last for several days and some last for a very long time. The leather ones do have better sliver protection than the...

Need Clarification On "Noodling" & Splitting Da Tuff Stuff!

As far as clogging when noodling. My experience is that saws with inboard clutches seem to have more room for the noodles to clear. You still have to be cognizant of your saw to be sure you don't clog it up. Noodling is a good way to make a huge round into manageable pieces.

    Any Gen-X’ers heating with wood?

Anymore when my group of woodcutting fools gets together for a weekend of cutting, we have enough equipment that we get a lot of wood done in a short period of time. Most of us only burn 3-5 cord a year so when you can pull 10-12 cord out of the timber one day, and split and deliver it the...

    Any Gen-X’ers heating with wood?

Sometimes the satisfaction is getting it done without investing much. Even though you could. Sometimes it's about the reward of getting something g0ing that someone else had discarded as junk. Cutting firewood is more about having a well-sharpened chain than a big ass saw, and keeping the...

    Craigslist laughs?

He's probably going to be hard to deal with. If its red oak, after 2.5 years in a shady spot the bottom rows are probably crap. Either way, there is going to be some loss. At least it is stacked so you can pull a tape and get an estimate of what you are starting with.

    Wood Stove Loading Direction?

My stove has air inlets front and center and an air wash system from above the door glass. The air control gates drop out the front and center inlets before throttling the air wash inlets. I generally stack the bottom layer perpendicular to the door opening to allow air into the stack and the...

Building a log splitter with a vertical shaft questions

I used the aluminum adapter for a horizontal setup from Surplus Center. When I figured it out, I could use a plate with both the bolt patterns for the vertical shaft motor and the adapter. I use flat head screws that I welded into the countersunk holes to in effect make studs to attach the...

    Runnin' Loads

Those big dump trailers tow a lot better behind an f450/550 sized truck. No brakes makes is tough no matter what. I don't envy you. Sent from my SM-G900R4 using Tapatalk

Premium Firewood:How Much Extra Work is it Worth?

This year we have started hauling out of the timber with a CTL and a grapple bucket. You just have to cut them in lengths short enough to maneuver though the trees. The loader has a 7000# tip weight so you can wrangle whole trees if you have the clearance. Usually though we ended up cutting...

Does owning a dump trailer make financial sense

I'll have to dig up some pics. It's a 94 K2500 with a 93 VE pumped non IC 6BT Cummins. The injectors are spec'd for some 275 hp industrial application at least that's what my injection pump guy told me. It's mated to a late GM NV4500HD with a Dodge Cummins input shaft using the Dodge...

Does owning a dump trailer make financial sense

This is mine. Being pulled by a Cummins infused Chevy. Had to go with an over deck because the tracks are too wide. Don

Does owning a dump trailer make financial sense

I wonder if he is talking max GVW instead of actual scale weight. Unless he had a utility box and a bunch of tools in it.

Does owning a dump trailer make financial sense

I haul my skidsteer in mine. Had to get a deck over to fit it. I have hauled rock and dirt in it from time to time. 5-6 ton of rock doesn't look like much in the trailer or on the ground so I understand having it hauled. Someday I'll have an over deck flatbed gooseneck but until then the...

Does owning a dump trailer make financial sense

Getting a gooseneck will help with the borrowing too. Plus they trail better in my experience. Sent from my SM-G900R4 using Tapatalk

    log splitter diagnosis

You probably want the first area of your outfeed grate to be solid and have a ramp so that gnarly stuff doesn't get caught on it and tear it off. Mine is is solid decked and made as light as possible since my splitter was rear heavy already. We have caught gnarly rounds on the leading edge of...

    Revalving splitter to auto valve

If you have nothing beyond it you may be able to plug it or get a plug to replace the power beyond port. You would need to call Prince to be sure as the autocycle valves are ported differently. Really the power beyond for most auto-cycle valves is not necessary if you are right handed or if...

    Revalving splitter to auto valve

If you want to have a log lift / 4 way adjust in addition to the auto cycle valve you have two choices. Either put the autocycle first or last. If you put it first you need this valve...

    Does this need splitting again?

White oak is a pretty slow seasoner. The stuff i'm burning now is 4 years old since I cut and split it. It sat outside in a stack outside of the wood shed until last summer. I would figure 2 years on white oak unless you split it real small. Think bundled firewood small. You do live in TN...

    Scrounging just got serious

I don't want to load it in the snow. Not with a steel bed. It's bad enough when it's wet and the tracks are a little muddy. When you just about hit the breakover point on the tracks the bed will tip up and line up with the ramp angle. You creep ahead and the bed goes down. If you forget to...
