    Felling Frozen Trees

It's peak harvest/culling season, here. The bottom where I'm working has been well below freezing for over a month - very rare in these parts - never seen it this bad. So, all the trees are frozen, hard - very brittle, falling like snags, dropping limbs, hinge breaks early, etc. No...

    HELP with old cabled oak

While visiting relatives over Thanksgiving, I took these pix of an old cabled oak, about 50" DBH, cable at 30-40ft up. I do not do cabling so the question is: does this cable put the tree at risk? If so, any recommendations?

    New Stihl 200T Question

Finally, my 20 yr old top handle has been declared dead ... RIP! Bought a 200T today ... long over due ... The normal Stihl cases are rediculously large for that small saw. Any advice ... to case or not to case? ... that is the question. If case, what case? If no case ... what?

    Be careful what you climb!!!

AIN'T NOTHIN' LIKE LUCK! Here I am at 60ft, "fat, dumb & happy" ... OK! skinny, DUMB & happy: Here's what the inside looked like: The tree looked ok; - well leaved in the summer, - good root swell and structure, - good flex & sway in the wind, - sounded solid as far as I could reach...

    Pruning problem

Here's and example of a pruning problem I see alot. I have to remove the branch (sucker?) on the left. There is no well defined "collar" to cut to. So, what is the best final cut to make to minimize stress on the main stem (right), to offer the best chances of recovery and if possible callus...

    Dutchman 101

DUTCHMAN: Tree falling cut that alters the function of the "normal" notch/hinge. Some believe a dutchman adds nothing to a properly executed notch and hinge. Apparently, it is also believed some 'difficult' trees will not lay as desired with normal cuts, so additional cuts are sometimes...

Help - Stihl 360 Pro Muffler Mod

I want to muffler mod a Stihl 360 pro. There probably is a post explaining how, somewhere! Did the search thing - can't find a good post of DIY details. Can anyone walk me through the procedure or at least point me to a link that does?

    Helmet recommendation?

I've worn out my third Stihl helmet with screen & muffs - ready for a new one. The screen & muffs are nice in the winter but hot in summer and get in the way topside - knocked it off once. Thought about a chin strap but Stihl doesn't offer one. Sherrill's got half-dozen to choose from. Any...

    Climbing rig pictures

Been climbing for years though not often but, I've got a lot of climbing coming up and am looking for a more efficient rig and technique. I've been using a sit-stand (~Texas) method and seems too inefficient. Maybe, I'm just impatient. I would appreciate some pictures and recommendations...

    Help with a mid-line loop

Often, I use a mid-line loop in rigging. I've had some (rare) trouble with the "lineman's loop" (alpine buterfly) under some directional load it has 'rolled' (tripple-checked, tied per http://www.animatedknots.com/alpinebutterfly/index.php?LogoImage=LogoGrog.jpg&Website=www.animatedknots.com)...

    throwline bag tips

Throwline bags are GREAT for storing and throwing line. But, a real pain to 'stuff', especially when working in the crown. Has anyone got any neat tricks to stuff 200' of 1/8" into the bag. The fishermen line strippers don't work in mid-line.
