    Hard to start old chainsaw

Many people have reccomended new fuel lines. What effect do old fuel lines have? Obviously I can see the need to change the fuel filter and clean up the carb, but as long as the fuel lines aren't leaking and aren't clogged, how do they impact the running of the saw?

    Hard to start old chainsaw

Here are some pics of it as it looks today (I took these with my phone so they're not the greatest quality):

    Hard to start old chainsaw

Where is a reputable place to get the required parts for my saw? There are so many advertisers on this site I don't know where to start. Who's got quality parts for a 25 year old saw?

    The Beg for Manuals Thread

I'd like anything I can get my hands on for a Stihl 028 AV Super (owner's manual, shop manual, IPL, etc). Thanks!

    Hard to start old chainsaw

I have used the saw several times in the last 2 years or so, and it seems to run fine once it's started, at least to my untrained ear. The problem is just in getting it started. It will take many, many pulls of the cord, even with a shot or three of starting fluid. Once it seems like it's...

    Hard to start old chainsaw

I just tried this. It hung there fat dumb and happy, swinging around for a few seconds, then dropped a couple inches and I could hear it turn once, it hung there at that level again for a couple seconds swinging, dropped 1 crank again, hung there a few seconds, etc. Definately not a straight...

    Hard to start old chainsaw

I just checked the saw model, it's a Stihl 028 AV Super. There's no indication of when it was manufactured.

    Hard to start old chainsaw

Would a normal automotive compression tester work or do I need a chainsaw/small engine-specific one? What is the procedure for testing compression on a chainsaw? Just screw in the tester and pull the cord?

    Hard to start old chainsaw

I'll check the model when I get home; I don't remember it offhand. The cord is not hard to pull, it pulls easily and the engine cranks but it just seems like it won't turn over or catch without a shot of starting fluid. To my untrained eye/ear, it seems like it needs a priming button like...

    Hard to start old chainsaw

I inherited my dad's Stihl after be passed away. He died in 1989 so that gives you an idea of how old the saw is. It sat for close to 20 years as I had no use for it. In the last couple years I've started using it again and it runs and works fine once it's running, but it can be incredibly hard...

Chainsaw runs but chain doesn't turn

I feel like an idiot but that was indeed the problem. I only use this saw once every couple of years and I now remember that I had this same problem last time I used the saw. It took me forever to figure out it had a chain brake and how to release it. Thanks for the tips guys.

Chainsaw runs but chain doesn't turn

I'm a newbie when it comes to the workings of chainsaws (this particular chainsaw was my dad's). How do I tell if the chainbrake is on on this particular saw?

Chainsaw runs but chain doesn't turn

I have a very old (20+ years) Stihl 028 AV Super Chainsaw that I'm trying to use. It seems to start and run fine, but when I hit the throttle the chain doesn't turn and the engine seems to bog down, like the chain is hung up on something. I'd definately like to try to keep this chainsaw...
