    Wood ID?

Good "guess" but no cigar. We have lots of Paulownia in our area, but they have huge leaves and are not compound.

    Wood ID?

Got some free firewood from a blowdown in an old cemetery here in SE PA. No idea what it is. I am familiar with most common trees in our area. Wood did not give me the feeling it would make the best firewood. I also looked thru a Tree Field Guide twice to no avail. Tree was 3-4ft in...

    Bar Sprocket Locked Up?

I drug the chain across the dead locust many times. Always worked on chip dams before. Could not get the chain to budge. I do not think it was chip problem. Thats why I suspect a problem with the bearings/bushing? in the sprocket. Just trying to avoid a mechanical problem in the future when...

    Bar Sprocket Locked Up?

Stihl bar has no hole for greasing. Everything looked good in bar tip area. Wood chips lodged in the sprocket area was my first thought, even though that has never happened over many years of cutting. Also, since the sprocket "broke loose" immediately after hitting it with the screwdriver...

    Bar Sprocket Locked Up?

Never had this happen before, in many years of running saws. 290 Stihl with 20" bar. One year old, not used hard. Chain is in good condition and was adjusted correctly, with plenty of bar oil. Had just finished cutting down a 12" dead locust when the chain locked up on the bar. Checked all...

    Unseasoned Sour Cherry

How well does Cherry wood (and brush/leaves) burn when unseasoned? Lost half a very large Sour Cherry tree in last Fridays storms and now have a large brush pile to burn. Will it burn wet or should I let it dry out for a couple weeks before trying to burn it? Seems to me I remember Cherry wood...

    029 stalling

Have the same problem on my 029. Has been doing it on and off for a good while. Just had a carb kit put in to fix another problem, and it did not help the stalling problem. Adjusted the H and L screws, seems to be no help there. New fuel line also. Will run good when in a big cut. Stalling...

Wood ash has N-P-K analysis of 0-1-3.

Potatoes will do well in a slightly acid soil. Also, the condition called scab, a common potato ailment, thrives in alkaline soil. One reason potatoes grown in Maine do so well. There are reports of highly alkaline gardens in the New England states due to wood burners putting their ashes in...

Please critique my muffler mod (MS290)

Hey POSI, thanks for the great pics and how-to's. I just cut my 029 muffler similiar to your mod, and I am really pleased. Richened up the HS screw and she is a lot snappier with what feels like power to spare, and still pretty quiet. Cutting wood just got funner!

Strange white spots on a poplar tree

Sounds like a common fungus that lives/feeds on dead wood. The tree should probably be cut down or it will blow down eventually.

    ailanthus worth it to burn?

I have burned some of it for several years. I believe it is considered an invasive species- not native to US. Most people like to keep it off their properties. Because of its fast growing nature, it blocks out native, more valuable species, thus your logger suggesting to get rid of it. Also...
