I have a Dolmar 6100 also and can well attest to its ease of starting and smooth running, obviously good power and excellent filtration. You do however mention arthritis and joint pains so another saw that I think you should consider is the Dolmar 420 or 421, not sure what the Makita model is...

I've had two of those saws in the past, always had the Stihl fuel line with the moulded on grommet. Your local Stihl dealer can't get the correct fuel line?

One year warranty versus five is not the deal it looks like as it's for manufacturers defects, which if you actually use your saw you will find any and all within the first year. Never ran the Echo though I do own some other OPE and it just plain works. But I do have a 6100 and it is one smooth...

Yup, sounds reasonable. The 590 will give you the most bang, but its not the weight but its size IMO that makes it less of an ideal all-arounder. I'm a Dolmar fan as the saws are just so good and not expensive like the other big two, and don't think you'd be unhappy with a 510. Some consider it...

I'd say it's more than just "OK" in the handling department. Handling is subjective anyway, everyone's different and for me it handles as well as most other saws I've used. For the price these Dolmars are a great value.

If that old Poulan did all you wanted and you're just looking for a newer and better quality saw, just get that Dolmar 510, its built like a tank. German design and quality without an overabundance of cheap plastic. If you want to spend a few extra dollars, step up to the 5105. In all reality...

Stihl 241 is a really nice saw, though I don't know that it's twice as nice as a Dolmar 421.

You've been getting by with a 450, so a 372xp will be a big step up. The 385 or 390 may be better at milling but for versatility that 372 will be hard to beat.

The Dolmar 5105 is a screaming deal here in Canada, hundreds of dollars less than the competition. FWIW, I wouldn't worry about that other one being new-old stock. It comes with the same warranty.

Not on the original list but my Echo PT-260 has proven strong and reliable. Prior to picking it up I rented a pre-4mix Stihl once, HT80 or something. I couldn't notice much difference other than I prefer the trigger handle on the Echo, just seems to balance somewhat better.

Echos are so darned reliable at starting, even with old fuel. Never had an issue starting my blower or pole saw. They just work, period. The Dolmar 420/421, 510 or 5105 are all good. I find them to be very well built. The 420 punches above its size but its still 42cc. The 510 has extra muscle...

If like 166 has said this 4600 is basically a smaller bore 5100, it would make a great parts saw for a 5100/5105. That alone would make it worth $60-$70. If you could get it running for not much more that's a bonus.

If price is no object just pick a good Stihl dealer and get yourself the MS201T.
