I also have the tech tach, it is wireless also, had it about two years, works great on everything I have. I like the max rpm button readout b/c it updates so fast you may not actually catch the max rpm with your eye.
I agree with you stumpy, that is part of the reason I think it is white oak is the grain, yes leaf id is for sure not the end all be all, thanks for bringing up the grain topic, I just feel a lot of people (also myself) are not as definitive about the grain as say the bark and leaves.
This thread is a perfect example of dumba#$ responses to wood IDs, of many of which thoughts I have been guilty, but usually do not post. Tomtrees has been 100% accurate in all the wood id threads that I can remember. Of course IDing by bark alone can be very difficult, perfect example is...
Ok, so I got a 036 off craiglist with nice 20 in. bar for 50 or 60 bucks a year ago. He couldn't get it to start but it wasn't locked up is how I got such a good deal. Turns out the carb was set like 5 screws too rich. So I adjust it right and it fires up but running sorta rough. Was made I...
Yeah I am not a total idiot on adjusting carbs but any of my next saws will definitely be autotune or the stihl version, really wanting a 35-45 cc light autotune saw, would pay top dollar.
I agree with others, you are spoiled. I have the same sorta mindset about people that own chainsaws but don't heat with wood, WHAT ARE THEY THINKING? Some people just don't think the same. I do plan on having my next house have a bunch of wooded acres and scrounge mostly off it and make a...
Ok obviously different areas of the country may be different, the main bug I have heard that can be a problem inside is the powder post beetle but I think you may have to have natural wood exposed as in no painting or staining it. I would obviously not worry about termites or ants. Last winter...
I would take it with me as it sounds like that is one of the easier systems to set up. Do you have a good spot in the new house you want to put it? Also, I doubt there are many buyers looking for a ready to take a wood stove house. Some people probably see it as a liability or a waste of...
The 2nd pic I posted, unless you are joking ( I'm not good with those faces) in which case yeah I wouldn't mind cutting that tree up either, pretty huge white oak.
So I got most of the hickory today, it seemed rather dry even being down only a week or so, must have something to do with not getting rain for a month in this heat. Just for future reference, that pic of the live tree I put up was actually a white oak.
According to tree id book beech grows in my area, haven't seen it yet, apparently up north and in europe it will make whole forests or subsections of forest.
Glad to see I'm not the only one getting hot B+C's. I liked the post about proper chain tension, that will help I just think when you are turning so many rpms in hard wood there is going to be a lot of heat, the cutters arent lubed afterall. Maybe pine at 10 degrees Fahrenheit cuts cool; 30...
I am of the opinion that the bar lube just lubes, it doesn't actually cool anything off. I do think it prevents more heat building up from too much friction but yeah after running awhile in hard wood my chain and bar get hot enough there is no way I'd touch em barehanded. About the only thing...
I agree Hedgerow, I have seen plenty of hickory around here, but never been able to get one, let alone a shagbark. There are a ton of nice hickory's behind where I work, but they are either mockernut or pignut, havent really looked that close. They grow a lot slower than oaks from what I have...
That is great you are manually splitting to stay in shape even though you have hydraulic. I don't really touch my fiskars since getting hydraulic. Manual is too hard on my shoulders and elbows and I am young and in fairly good shape. If I had to split manually, I'd get over it and do it, but...
What makes you think that, shaggy bark? I trust you guys way more than me, I've just seen a lot of silver maple and white oak with shaggy bark around here, it does look like there might be some hickory leaves up in the corner of that pic.
