Want to Buy Chip truck: diesel, 4x4, 1 1/4 ton or larger.

I'm in the market for a chip truck, or one that could carry an 8' chipbox as well as L pack tool boxes. I'm thinking F-550,450 or Chevy 4500 or 5500, but will consider other makes too.

Salsco brush chippers....how would you rate the quality and performance?

A friend of mine is considering buying a Salsco wood chipper....Probably a 12" or larger. He's looking for a trailer type with diesel engine. Has anyone owned or used one and how would you rate them? ( I asked this question in the equipment forum, but not too many responses)

Best care for old apple trees?

I think there is some "black rot" fungus....and that produces cankers, right? The signs of black rot are a powdery black substance on the deadwood and where bark meets the deadwood. Thanks for the advice.

Chipper blades need sharpening- where can they be sent?

Thanks- this sounds like a really good deal. I'll look into them.

Best care for old apple trees?

dead wood Thanks for those tips. How do you decide if a limb should be removed when most of the limbs have some deadwood, but are still supporting live branches with buds? Reducing the tree's photosynthesis capacity is not in it's best interest, no?

Chipper blades need sharpening- where can they be sent?

I have a Morbark 6" disc chipper. I don't remember the exact size of the blades, but they are double sided. I have two sets. Do any of you mail your blades away for sharpening, or do you bring them to a dealer who then ships them somewhere? There is a Bandit dealer about 25 miles from me, but it...

Best care for old apple trees?

I have 3 old apple trees that could use some help. They are not in the best shape. They are vase shaped, about 25 feet tall, with about four main limbs. Each of these has exposed dead wood on the top side, running for many feet. There are dead branches here and there which I can prune out...

VT climbing hitch....using 4 wraps and two braids. Anyone else use this?

prussic cord wear Sounds like good advice- thanks. I've decided I like the 8mm cord versus the 10mm, but I think I can use the 10mm with the 4+2 setup. I just have to put in some more climbs until I get used to it. Another question is how do you decide when a prussic cord is...

VT climbing hitch....using 4 wraps and two braids. Anyone else use this?

Yes, I do tie it with an eye to eye prussic. In my mind a prussic is one type of split tail. The matter I want to discuss is the difference between the way two braids perform versus three braids.

VT climbing hitch....using 4 wraps and two braids. Anyone else use this?

I recently was having trouble advancing my VT hitch when I tied it with the normal 4 wraps, 3 braids, using a Yale 10mm beeline split tail, 30 inches long. It takes too much force to advance and is hard on my shoulder. When I use a 8mm split tail, it advances fine. I'm using 1/2 inch climbing...

Anyone set a tree down slowly with a rigging line and porta-wrap?

The dimensions of the pine in question are 30" at the butt, by 70 feet tall. It stands in a group with two smaller pines that also need to go, so if I decide not to "hang" the big tree, I might use it as an anchor for doing that with the other two trees. Your method on those two elms sounds like...

Anyone set a tree down slowly with a rigging line and porta-wrap?

Thanks for the advice, DT. If I want to lower a 40 foot tree, does the block in the anchor tree need to be at 40 feet, or could it be lower and still do the job? Another question: does the anchor tree need to be in line with the felling direction, or can it be off set at a 45 degree angle or...

Anyone set a tree down slowly with a rigging line and porta-wrap?

I need to remove a big white pine, but the homeowner is extra picky about her lawn. This tree is big enough to pound a big trench into it. I will rig the top and some other chunks of wood down, but I am considering felling the last 30 feet with it tied off to a nearby tree. The rigging line...

What length bar is best for dropping a 50" diameter tree?

My saw is 71cc, if a 36" bar is too much for it to power, what is a good compromise? Also, what does full skip chain look like....I've never bought it.

What length bar is best for dropping a 50" diameter tree?

I will be dropping a very big pine, tensioned with a line to the truck of course. My Husky 372 has a 20" bar, and so far I haven't needed anything longer. But with a 50" diameter trunk, the face cut and the back cut, I'll be making a 10" hinge, which we don't want. What is a good length bar for...

    New to speed line use

tie off? Beatmaster, thanks for the insight on speed lines. I wanted to practice it today, but the job was a big one and there was no time to spare. Soon enough though. The job I really need to use it on has thick limbs that are over a roof, so getting tension on the line will be important so...

    New to speed line use

My groundman and I will be taking down a big silver maple later this summer and I think the best way to remove certain limbs will be with a speed line. But, we haven't used one before....so i plan to give it a try next week on some trees that aren't over a house. I'm thinking the simplest setup...

    Favorite wire-core lanyard?

Never heard of "flipline hitch" or "high riggers hitch". What kind of hitch are we talking about? Does it resemble a prusic......do you have a picture?
