60cc Saws the "Best" general purpose saw concept proven over time? Maybe

Cool thread - thanks for sharing the video. Thats it in a nutshell - most of the work we do around here. We fell some in the woods and cut a lot of cedar posts etc. but this is the jist. My first good saw was a 357xp - an excellent saw; however, influences from this site soon had me selling it...

    Beautiful junk wood

Nothing wrong with Manitoba maple! It always gets a bad wrap - it seasons quickly and burns great. Obviously it wont last as long as hard maple etc., but it is a long way ahead of many woods. If some needs to be cut and cleaned up, the btu's are worth my time. Think of all those guys up north...

Poll: What is the saw to have in the 70-80cc range?

372's always win these polls. All the saws listed are obviously quality, but there is just something special bout a 372xp! And these votes are split between 3 different versions of the saw. Just something about a 372 that seems to hit the sweet spot for so many applications! Can't go wrong with...

Sooooo, I thought I would have enough... Then I ran out... Rant plus need advice.

Prolly getting around 6 cord burned to date. Mostly ash, and a bit of maple and 'junk' wood early on. Usually like to have about 12 cords to feel comfortable, about 8 hardwood and 4 whatever. Last year I think we may have topped 12 cord. Feeding a large Dutchwest stove and smaller insert to heat...

Want a bigger firewood saw - 4 choices

372xp! A legend and great all around saw - I wouldn't be concerned that you already have a stihl unless the dealer support is important to you. Everyone that has one is right!

    Chaps?

+1 on the pants! They don't flap around or get caught on things when you are working in snarly, uneven terrain in the bush, which I usually am! Pants are like well pants.. only slightly heavier and thicker. Get a pair of suspenders to go with it and you are good to go!

    Popup vs Flat Top?

What is it with chainsaws anyway? Not really on any other forums, but here on AS drama is never far around the corner. Always seem to be guys jostlin for superiority - its a frickin chainsaw! I get it, some guys are passionate about it and some do it for a living, but the fake high road, moral...

    So, what's your day job?

High School Phys. Ed teacher - great gig, also teach outdoor ed and coach basketball and soccer. I was a dairy herdsman for 10 years previous, and now live on a farm with my wife and horses! Still milking cows once in a while on the weekend and screwing around with the in-laws beef cattle.

    All Around Best Firewood

I am always surprised when I read threads like this that there isn't more votes for sugar maple. Best all around tree and wood around here in my opinion. Aside from maple we like ash and cherry, but burn anything that's seasoned that comes from cleanup around the farm and in the woods. I don't...

    Two chainsaws?

For what your cutting a 70+ cc saw and your good. I have a 372xp and 346xp and I want for nothing else. I would rather have 2 good saws, run them a lot, know them like the back of my hand than have a lot of extras saws to fill 'specific' needs. Unless your climbing why bother with a top handle -...

What is your BIG 3 in firewood?

Must be where I am at! Don't know why there is not more love for maple? We don't have hedge/ Osage orange, mulberry, hackberry etc in my neck of the woods so location I guess. Why the hate for 'box elder'? It is just above "douglas fir' on the btu chart and I know the guys out west love to burn...

What is your BIG 3 in firewood?

Sugar Maple - the king of all trees, living or being used for fuel, then Ash, Beech, and Hawthorn and Cherry. Lot of hate on here for "Box Elder". We call it Manitoba Maple here and we burn a lot of it. When dry, it burns great and hot, just does not last as long as hardwood! We always have a...

    2 saw plan

I love the only 2 saws I own: 372xp, and 346xpne - no need for anything else here around the farm. Once in a while I think I would like a 390xp, but it would only need to come out once or twice a year (cannot justify the money). I like having only two saws that I use the heck out of. I am not...

What's the best all around saw for work?

    372xp; nuff said.

    Which one MS460 or 372XP?

Pretty much anything is a fair price for a 372xp -- they are that good! Just kidding; I just love some 372 action. I had it buried in a huge beech for a good part of the afternoon yesterday:D Man I love that saw. I, of course, would say the 372 all day; however, if you are thinking of a Stihl...

One of the last 346xp's. Finally Mine.

Was wondering the same thing myself. Seems to be a lot of mud slinging/ wast of space posts lately!

    Husqvarna 357xp performance

The 357xp is a very good saw and is basically even in the power department with the US Stihl MS 361. There are threads in here doing stock comparison cutting in hardwood where they are neck and neck. There was some negativity around the 357 because they had to reinforce the case thus adding a...

What saw is better/should I keep?

The 350 is the better saw for sure, and if you are considering selling and the 025 is in decent shape, it may still bring a few bucks because of the Stihl name. Or, keep both of them as the others have suggested--seems you got a decent deal. Tim
