    Advanced Training

I can second that recommendation. I took the climbing course with Dwayne Neustator (ArborCanada) when he was still with Arbormaster. I thought it was a really good course. Also had the chance to attend a climbing and crane removal course with Mark Chisholm. The Mark Chisholm deal was...

how would you feel about this?

Two items that work completley different and have different purposes but look almost exactly the same. Someone (in the shipping dept-probly not an arborist) got the items confused and sent you the wrong one. Sounds like an honest mistake. You're an arborist and it's professional gear...

Now the hacks are attacking people and trees

You said it. I knew a couple of guys, one got killed and another got his chin cut from ear to ear (they were trying to cut his throat but he held is chin down hard enough they just thought they cut it-it was dark) flipping off some passing drivers. I hope they catch these guys. I can't...

    Collateral Damage; Owner Upset

Why can't you fire your kid? Hiring relatives is what isn't smart.

    Hiking Boots

I got a pair of Cat's. Steel shank is the key for me on spurs. I think they're as comfortable as you're going to get with a steel toe. Very aggressive sole, almost never slip. But they are heavy. BAB

    Problems with split-tails

The way you climbed before you had essentially 1 point of attachment and the balance of your sys was smack in the middle, so the during ascent the "pull" was in the middle. Now you've got 2 points of attachment and the balance is split between these 2 points. The closer the points of...

    5Ft of 9mm Pumpkin Line

I'm with you Larry. I had some trouble with that line at first. Even now I don't trust it completely. I was thinking most of my trouble was my climbing line was so new that the new cord wasn't grabbing. When it works it works great, but ... Still working it out. BAB

    When is enough, enough?

It's pretty simple really. Don't fire him because you're pissed off. Determine whether he meets your expectations as an employee. If he doesn't, you'll know what to do. Groundies come and go. Some you miss, some you can't remember thier names--kinda like girlfriends really.

    My next removal

Unitl I knock on that trunk, I really won't know. But my 1st impression was to get what's possible from the roof, then climb that ????? and get'er down. You don't need a crane (imo) and if you don't have a bucket truck, don't go rent one just for that tree. Get'er done Redbull, you'll be...

    hand filing

Man, what a great thread. Finally we're talking about something that has application to tree work. Sharpening chains is one of my weakest skills but like most things, I'm getting better with practice. I think one of the most impt steps in helping a beginner to sharpen a chain is to have...

Wonder if this is common practice

I don't get the "infinate [sic] room" comment. If they're hangers, they're hanging in the tree and I can imagine that as they pile up, the weight would make cutting many of the lower limbs more dangerous than otherwise. I dunno, I guess it doesn't matter in the end if you start at the top or...

    Bucket rescue question

I was trained to shuffle/hop to the truck and then leap onto it just last year. It was part of my Electrical Hazard Awareness Program from TCI. They sent a copy the ANSI standards too, but I didn't notice in that ANSI contradicted what TCI was teaching. I remember recently that the ANSI...

This is if you have a policy on using earplugs.

Wearing PPE takes getting used to. I wear earplugs because I want to protect my hearing. They don't make me any less safe. Sometimes they're good to have in just so you can ignore the idiot who's micromanaging your work. Cheers, BAB

    Climber vs. grounder

Good groundies can be trained, just like anyone else. But, as a rule I find climbers are the best groundies. In any case, the two should work as a team, each anticipating the other's needs. BAB

    Get to the top!

Of course it's Friday now and this is probably too late but, Jimmy are talking about climbing and pruning that tree with 2 lanyards and no climbing line? Scampering around with a 16' pole pruner and trying to work 2 lanyards (one of which is a loop runner) is going to be tedious at best. Use...

    2'nd Guessing

I recently took the CTW test along with several others who were taking the CA exam. All the id questions were from photos of mature trees, there were no samples. I was disappointed because the photos really didn't give you a good look at some of the trees. They were taken at different...

    2'nd Guessing

Learn the material, take the test, you can't lose. 1. You're a forestry student. The material covered in the CA exam is directly applicable to your degree. Even if you fail, whatever material you learn will have benefit to you while completing your degree. 2. Becoming a CA as a student...

    Descending using your figure 8

It's not very often that I use the fig 8 to descend. If I do, I use a friction hitch to back it up. Most of the time I just use the hitch to descend and if I think I'll be coming down too fast, I get a loose footlock on the tail to slow me down. It's too much trouble to put in the 8. BAB

    sales tax

Tax the Tax Here Nova Scotia, 2 taxes, Provincial and Federal, both add up to 15% and tree work is taxable once gross earnings exceed $20K. Everything is taxed here, and most often twice. Safety inspection of your vehicle (essentially a user fee), $14 plus tax. Have something...
