How To Store A Lot of Short Splits

I take a pallet and staple 3' chicken wire around it making a short bin. Works great for the shorts and odd stuff coming off the splitter. The tops were covered with a piece of heavy plastic and then shrink wrapped. Sides were left open.

Sawbuck for Douglas Fir limbs and small trees, version 2.0

I have been using the forklift to get the logs on the table. Most of what I am getting is from a construction company clearing lots. They chip the small stuff to sell the woodchips.

    Englander 28-3500 Furnace Discontinued

I own a 28-3500, great stove period. With that said I moved mine to my shop and bought a Drolet heatmax for the house. Believe it or not the new furnace is easier than the old 28-3500. More efficient, less creosote, still good heat output, thermostat controlled, auto dampener, etc. Cut my wood...

Sawbuck for Douglas Fir limbs and small trees, version 2.0

I like using a table. Put this one together using some scrap square tubing. Milled some oak 4x4 for the sacrificial top. Easy to pick up and move with a tractor. Needs more stake pockets but you get the idea.

Bands saw blade diving on knots and wider parts in the same log

I ran into that issue with some knotty hemlock this past spring. I increased my tooth set and the issue cleared up for me.

    Woods furnace choices

I picked up a Drolet Heatmax 3 years ago and love it. I cut my wood consumption in half over the Englander 3500 and have had NO creosote whatsoever. The Englander would require monthly cleanings as the pipe would plug up with creosote. The Drolet requires cleaning but its only ash that comes out...

Surplus Center 18.75 wheel/band size question

I agree with what the others have said. My Thomas mill wheels are about an 1" wide.

    Chimney Sweep Before & After

Looks like ash to me, I don't see much creosote. I would be happy with that.

    Electric is not that bad.

I have one in the basement beside the stove for the pieces that I got a little long to fit the stove. Works good for what it is.

How young is too young ?

My Grandpa left his xl12 in my Moms shed. I was 12 and my Mom wanted a tree cut so I did it for her. He was mad but that saw was somehow left in the shed with gas and oil from then on. He burned wood and I didn't kill myself so I got my start from there.

Auto cycle valve, worth it or not?

I love my auto cycle valve. Wouldn't run a splitter without one now. I believe there are two versions of the valve, one with no option for power beyond and one with that option.

Have you ever broke a saw chain?

Hit a nail in an oak tree from my yard and snapped one.

Do you know every tree in your woodlot?

Wish the family wood lot was still in the family. I knew that 35 acres like the back of my hand. I was in college when my Gram had to sell it off.

    going for the world record

Looks like the original super split to me. The x25-27 have a flair where the original is straight from the back to the front.

    Question of the day

I am a few years ahead on wood so I separate to an extent. The beech, maple, and birch get stacked together. The oak is in its own pile which is the majority of my wood. Beech and birch have not kept well for me beyond a year or so. I burn those up before I dig into the oak. I will be burning...

Stihl has stolen my source of cheap bar oil ‼

Used to get my oil at a local auto parts store here. Can't remember the name on the jug but it was red and super tacky. It was great to mix 50-50 with used hydro oil so I didn't mind paying $11 a gallon. Tackiest stuff I had ever seen straight from the jug, made great all season oil when cut...

Bought a splitting axe on Thursday.

It took me a while to get the hang of it. Let the wrist snap over center at the last second which whips the head down. I can't get the same action with the X27, handle is too long for me. I have the original and the X25, the narrower head of the original splits better for me. More force...

I like almost everything about firewood

Get a DR power wagon. Wouldn't be without mine for moving wood from the stacks to the basement. Got mine off craigslist for a song. I added 2x4 vertical posts so it can carry more firewood. The thing is a work horse.

Homeowner band saw options under $3,000

Check out the Thomas Bandsaw mills, made here in Brooks Maine. I have a friend that has their 6013 model and has cut 10,000 bf or more on it.

I'm about to throw my kids toy into the fireplace

"Sorry, that takes batteries that we don't have. Remind me next time we go to the store and we can get some"
