    smoke in the house

I had a Lopi Revere insert installed this past summer. It replaced an earth stove insert. I follow the directions for reloading and I get smoke coming back into the house. I open the bypass and open the primary air and then slightly open the door for a minute before putting wood in. Before I...

    First fire

I opened up a lot of windows this morning and got our first fire going in our new Lopi Revere insert. I think I am going to like this stove.

    New stove install

We said goodbye to our old Earth Stove insert and hello to our new Lopi Revere insert today. It only took 4 hours to remove the old stove and put in the new one. They had a lot of demo work to do before they could actually set the new stove in place. We will be waiting until later this fall to...

    wood for turning

A friend of mine is learning how to turn wood and I have given him some cherry and shagbark hickory along with some cherry berls. I have some paper birch and elm as well and I was wondering if they might be OK for turning. I also have some poplar, same question. Thanks in advance. Erik B

Stihl 2 in 1 fileing jig.

I just bought a Stihl 2 in 1 file. It is for my Stihl o29 that is using a 3/8 rapid micro chain. If I change the round file, can I use it on a 3/8 picco micro chain? I did see they sold them seperately but I don't know if the frame is good for more than one type of chain. The guy behind the...

Ground frozen and trees on the ground

I had some dead elm trees removed by a tree company this past fall that were too close to the house for me to take down. The one dead elm tree I really wanted down couldn't be climbed because of a bad split part way up. The ground at that time was to soft to get the bucket truck close enough...

    slippery wheelbarrow handles

During the winter when I am using my wheelbarrow to bring wood to the house, I struggle to hold on to the handles because my gloves are a bit slick on smooth wood. I have thought about using the kind of tape used on hockey sticks or bike handles. What have you found that works best for...

    Birch wood drying question

I have heard it is best to score the bark on a paper birch trunk to aid in drying if it can't be split right away. I will be having a paper birch dropped and I plan to get it blocked up after scoring the bark with my chainsaw. Should the blocks be stacked with the scored area up or down? I...

    splitter died

I was doing a bit of splitting this afternoon since it was a beautiful day. Heard some funny noises coming from the motor, and before I could do anything there was a bang and a cloud of smoke. I have had the splitter since 1999. The motor is a vertical shaft unit. pics show the details of...

    Morning visitors

These showed up in on our driveway this morning. I counted 16 of them. I had seen some of their tracks in the snow earlier this morning when I went out to get the newspaper. They eventually flew into the woods.

    ms192t trouble

My 192t starting acting up the last time I used it. I am used to having to baby the trigger right after firing it up but after I can get it up to speed and start cutting I have no more problems. This last time out I was having to baby the trigger just about every time I went from idle to full...

How much oil or gas did you use

Since I started burning wood many years ago I have gotten by with only using about 25% of the fuel oil I burned before I started burning wood. Winter of 14-15 was typical for western Wisconsin and I used 128 gallons of #2 oil. I know many on here do not get 100% of their heat from wood so I...

    Beautiful junk wood

I split some box elder this morning and noticed how beautiful the red color in it is. When I cut it I noticed a lot of bright red chips flying out of the saw. I gave a few pieces of that tree to a friend of mine who is getting into wood turning.

    Hundreds of trees cut today

All those hundreds of trees were cut by hand and I didn't get a single stick of firewood. They were all maple. And in my garden. Had a bumper crop of helicopter seeds this year and a lot of them started growing in my garden. A tiller and a hoe were the tools to take down all of those trees...

    Bolt recommendation

I have broken about 3 bolts on my speeco splitter over the years. It is the one holding the wedge to the ram. Size is half inch by 3 inches. I have been replacing it with a grade 8 bolt and it lasts for maybe 5 years. It is real easy to replace but I was wondering what others are using for...

    Cost of dropping trees

What would be the difference in price for climbing and piecing a tree down or using a bucket truck to get the tree on the ground? Cleanup is not part of the job. I am just looking for a ballpark number that might best be expressed in percentage, i.e. using a bucket truck is 20% less than...

    Work bench in the woods

After spending much time sitting on the ground working on my saws while in the woods, I came up with this setup for using my trailer to bring my work up to a comfortable level. I used an old shelf and attached two pieces of2X4's to keep it from sliding around.
