New method of destroying a saw

I had a neighbor once that was super nice (older couple with some early college kids), but dumb as a box of rocks when it came to anything mechanical. A screwdriver was pushing their technical capabilities. And apparently it was genetic. The son was home for fall break or something and was...

    design of modern chain saws.

50 year old lawnmowers didn't rust. I know they are made of steel and it isn't stainless, but by god the chassis doesn't seem to deteriorate at the rate a new one does. Growing up we had an old T style handle mower, nicked named "old greeny" because it was painted green. Standard B&S 3.5HP...

    Which Worx saw to buy?

Hey now, 4HP (peak obviously) doesn't have to be that bad. I mean think about some of the power tools around that are pushing 2+ HP. My router is 2.25HP and spins past 20k. Shop Vacs are beyond 3HP and spin at a decent speed. A good electric chainsaw can be made, but the real question is...

    design of modern chain saws.

Supercharged using a modified cooling fan setup and having it divert some of the airflow to cooling the cylinder would be the best way to achieve positive pressure... But like everyone said you're going to be blowing fuel out of the exhaust just because of the way 2 strokes work. Honestly...

    Briggs carnage

I assume that one failed while in normal operation... I had a neighbor at one time who were super nice, but mechanically inclined as bricks. Their son was told to mow the yard. I'm thinking he was 15 or 16. Anyway he checked over everything, put gas in it, checked the oil and noticed there...

    Someone level with me..... Please!

I run the Echo Power Blend stuff as well... I'm assuming you have the squeeze/measure bottle? Why not just keep it around when empty and use it to measure with it. I'd say refill it, but without having it in front of me I'm not sure that'd really work well.

    something went wrong

I fixed some broken fins on a flywheel once...however it was a lawmower that my neighbor grenaded. I found aluminum brazing rod seemed to work pretty good. (During this time I also learned that if you use a torch to try and braze a magnesium piece it is likely to disintegrate and catch fire.)...

Echo CS 400 will not start

With the 2 Echo's I've owned if they sit for a while they can be a bit touchy to get started... Usually I just lock the throttle open, no choke, and let it rip... As soon as it hits off I pop the throttle and it's good to go.

    Old Echo experts chime in

Well since it seems like a possibility that you may need a new one can that one be opened or is it pretty much a sealed unit? And then the next obvious question is if it comes apart can you take pictures?

total NEWB,... Buy a refurb Husky 455R or a Stihl 290 Farmboss?

I know we are talking about for the occasional homeowner work, but still the 455 feels heavy and bigger than need be to me. I know I'm an Echo fan, but I'd take the 500P or higher over the 455 anyday. Now if price or use wasn't an issue I'd step right up to a Stihl or Husky pro series saw, but...

    Old Echo experts chime in

The distance from the flywheel to the coil would impact the spark strength on a standard coil setup...(don't know how close you have it rigged.) Repairing the module would really depend on how it is built. If it is just a circuit board in a box then there is a possibility.

total NEWB,... Buy a refurb Husky 455R or a Stihl 290 Farmboss?

IMO if you are considering the consumer grades saws why not look at an Echo CS-450P, 500P, or 550P depending on what kind of prices you could find one for. I've got the older CS-440 and it's been rock solid.

    Old Echo experts chime in

I'm curious about that as well. Not so much that I have a saw (or any engine) that uses it, but just because I have a background in electronics and it looks interesting.

    Octane

I'm just the casual homeowner so I'm the one whole keeps mixed fuel sitting around for 6 months at a time.... Frankly I buy the 93 high test cause it is the only fuel I can get that doesn't have ethanol in it. Add in some Stabil into the larger can and then mix a gallon or so in my...

    A DIFFERENT eBay experience ...

My Echo CS-440 off Ebay came packaged well and fired up without much issue...however (this is a non-chainsaw issue, but goes inline with what's being said here): My wife collects Fiesta pottery/dishware. She buys from Ebay maybe once a month, and I bet at least half of all her orders have...

What the @%&# can i paint my bars with that will stick!?!? Help!!!!

I agree with this. Power coating is going to be the best long term solution if you want it painted. I wonder if you could take a stripped bar, coat it in oil and "season" it sort of like cast iron. If it half way worked then all the bar oil would just keep it reasonably rust free assuming...

    H125B Muffler Mod Comparison

I've always assumed blowers had an rpm limited coil.. I tweaked the carb on my Echo and it has much better pickup and cold weather performance now, but it does use a tad more fuel. Is there any way to tell if the coil is limiting the blower...I mean there isn't much point in modding it if I...

ECHO Chainsaws - are they catching on?!

Well not everyone that stops by here is cutting for a living either. I'm just a simple homeowner who really likes to tinker and fix stuff. Needless to say I inherited a CS-306 from my father-in-law who isn't the best at keeping up regular maintenance...and well lets just say I learned what not...

Too Old or Compression Too High

My Echo CS-440 does this, or seems to do something very similar. If it sits for a while, more than a couple of days, it is fairly hard to pull over. Usually I pull it in short pulls (just 1 turn over) 4-6 times, until the mix gets in the cylinder. Once it does it gets a lot easier. Usually...

Batery powered chainsaws - when ?

Well in this crowd it seems like you'd need a pretty big battery to replace something like a 660... But I do like your idea of the gen trailer. Perhaps it should be commercial sales, like to Uhaul rentals or something. Pick one up for a week out of town or something. I still like the idea...
