Just make sure the wood has been soaked in used motor oil....

Got a little nervous last night

I've done that. It's kind of scary. Glad nothing happened.

    Dumb question....

    Thanks for the lesson!

    Warning...doom, death, & danger!

Yup. You've got to be careful. Never let small children near the log pile either. To them, it looks like a giant jungle gym. Sometimes it's best to have a "controlled" collapse of your log pile. If I see what looks like a potential hazard, I'll make it fall myself. Use pulp hooks or a pick...

    Wood kiln

My uncle was going to build one using an old grain bin (those corrugated steel types) and a high CFM blower. Not sure what ever became of it, but it seemed like not a bad idea.

    Dumb question....

but here it goes. Will carpenter ants "wake up"? I have a chance at some nice dry wood, but I noticed dead/frozen ants in it. Are they dead, or dormant - and if I bring it in the house, will they "wake up" with the warmth and infest the rest of my wood? Thanks.

How cold is your house in the morning?

How cold is your house in the morning? At roughly 25F (-5C) nightime temp (give or take), mine is around the 66F (18 or 19C) come morning, with moderately running the stove. What do others find?

    diesel engine won't start

Got the old girl running. Just had to leave it on the charger a little longer than usual. Thanks again for all the help, everyone.

    diesel engine won't start

Yeah - we've got a few of them in our shop, and they are almost always cranky to get going. Usually, it is the battery - even when they are "off", the circuit boards seem to drain the battery slowly (that is what I think happens anyway). I may start disconnecting the battery when they are not...

    diesel engine won't start

It has electronics. It is actually a 50Kv generator.

    diesel engine won't start

It glows itself for 10 seconds, then tries to start 3 times. The engine was indoors and warm, so the oil should not be very thick. I did notice that it drops to around 9V when it tries to turns over, which seems a little low.

    diesel engine won't start

I'm leaning towards battery, but even with a 200A booster, it still turns over slowly. Got it on a trickle charge for now.

    diesel engine won't start

Hello, I have a John Deere industrial engine (4.5 litre) that will not start. It has sat for a while, but was running fine. What is happening is that it turns over very slowly. I have tried to jump start it, but it still turns over very slow, and will not fire. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Oh so thankful for wood heat

You really notice it when you go to others people places who do not heat with wood. Many I know keep the thermostat at around 66F, which I find comparable to a meat locker - when you're used to 75 in your own home (first thing in the morning can be a bit chilly, though - but it builds...

How full do you load your stove?

Thanks for all the responses. Keep them coming. This brings me to my second question - what is the highest temp. you are comfortable running your stove at? Thanks.

How full do you load your stove?

Hello, How full do you pack your stove? Just a few splits at a time, or do you jam it full? What do you think is better?

Small "nick" in splitter ram, how to fix

If it has a small leak, the seal in the cylinder has already been cut. As for the ram, you could try a very fine file, or emery cloth to try to bring it down to 'even" with the rod.

So you think you can back up a truck?

Impressive. When I used to haul trailers/wagons, at the end of the day it was all I could do to back my car into the driveway. I'd always turn the steering wheel the wrong way.

    Splitter pump noise

I had electric motors and such in my head for some reason..... sorry about that. Are you able to tell how much pressure and actual flow you have? Once these are established, we can start eliminating things. Hydraulics make noise, but they shouldn't be horribly loud, either.
