    Finally Sharpened My Chain Correctly

S37D, try to find the 3 sharpening angles. Maybe on the box or on a paper inside. You could look the chain up on the internet possibly. I've only see 0-degree or 10-degree "vise-tilt" angles. My grinder only has 2 setting for this angle, 0, +10 (and -10). I like stihl chains because they use...

    Buying trees for firewood

I have on rare occassion given one third of what I cut to the landowner and that is still way too much. Imagine your 50/50 arrangement and you've worked for 2 solid days for your share, and then you have to work for two full days for him with nothing coming home with you. It's like paying with...

    Seasoning wood

Weigh and record a sample piece or two, round and split. You'll be surprised just how much water weight is lost during various months and conditions.

    Stihl Raker Grinder machine

Does anyone own one of these raker machines or know of a link to an image of one? The Stihl part number is 5202 201 0601. I would like to see how it's built and try to understand why it's over $700. Granted, rakers are the biggest hassle of the sharpening process, but the machine must be a real...

HF chain sharpener-- anybody got one?

My main grinder is an oregon 511AX but I got one of the HF units on sale and then applied a 20% off coupon for a total price of $24. i got it for just doing rakers so I won't need to change wheels on my main grinder. The wheel it comes with is too thin (1/8") for 3/8"-pitch, or rakers, so I...

    Raker height with grinder

I'm thinking of putting a Harbor Freight dial-indicator (if they sell them), on the pedestal base that my grinder is bolted to. A magnetic base woiuld be particularly convenient to place the indicator over top of the newly sharpened cutter, zero it out, and then measure the drop down to the...

Converted MS290 from .325 to 3/8, Now Gushing Oil

The first 3 in the 33RSC chisel chain represents 3/8" pitch, the 2nd 3 represents .050" gauge. The new bar even shows .050 and 3/8 on it too. The only thing I can do now is to flip the bar, then move the suspect 20" chain & bar to the ms441 to see if it seals oil. That's all I can think of.

Converted MS290 from .325 to 3/8, Now Gushing Oil

I forgot to add that when I pulled off the clutch drum to check the pump spring was in the notch, it appeared dry of oil inside that area. That tells me the excess oil is not coming from that area. If I come up with a dead end maybe I'll put the problem new 20-inch bar and chain on the ms441...

Converted MS290 from .325 to 3/8, Now Gushing Oil

Thanks for all the help. I believe a possible reason for the ..812.. suggested bar, is that Stihl also suggests the green safety chain on the ms290. For over a year since I've had and operated the ms290, I bought it with the yellow chissel chain and that's what the dealer supplied (3003 000 8921...

Converted MS290 from .325 to 3/8, Now Gushing Oil

I do not intend to swap bars between my two saws. I always had the 20" max-limit on the ms290 and still prefer it that way. I don't have to bend over as far when limbing and I've had the nose burried in red oak and was impressed with the performance, of course that was with .325 and not swapped...

Converted MS290 from .325 to 3/8, Now Gushing Oil

Thanks for all the help. About to go out now and check. One thing I would like to mention though. I WAS getting oil out of the saw's slot that lines up with the bar. If the clutch-drum notch wasn't lined up with the spring, would it pump at all? It almost seems like I have "too much" oil...

Converted MS290 from .325 to 3/8, Now Gushing Oil

Don't be so sure, as I've never changed one before. It did sound different when spinning but I thought is was due to the larger chain. Do you have links to illustrations of this oil-pump spring and notch in the drum? In the meantime I'm going out to the garage to dismantle and take a look. Thanks.

Converted MS290 from .325 to 3/8, Now Gushing Oil

The reason I'm doing this is to be able to sharpen for both saws quicker and more efficiently without changing grinding wheels and being able to buy bulk chain of the same type for both the MS290 and the MS441. That added efficiency and always having a freshly sharpened chain should make up for...

Converted MS290 from .325 to 3/8, Now Gushing Oil

I'll have to check the bar's oil ports like you said, thanks. Anyone know if this combo goes together?

Converted MS290 from .325 to 3/8, Now Gushing Oil

I have been wanting to convert my Stihl MS290 saw over to 3/8 so that I can grind chains for my MS441 without changing wheels, and standardize on 33RSC chain. So today I bought the same style Stihl 20" Rollomatic-E bar (pn 300 3008 8921) but for 3/8" chain. I also switched from the old drive...

Grinding Angle Question for Oregon 72 Chain

I don't use Oregon chain but I'm sharpening some #72 chain for a friend at work. My 511AX grinder shows a chart with various grinding angles for various Oregon chain and the Oregon 72 chain shows up in 3 or 4 of those chart rows. Does this mean I can choose any of those 4 grinding-angle...

    Raker height with grinder

Bailey's has it. I just found it and ordered it this morning with a bunch of other stuff. This wheel should fit the Harbor Freight grinder as long as it's not too thick to accept the arbor. It's only twice as thick as the supplied 1/8". If worse came to worse, I won't be able to bolt the...

    Raker height with grinder

I think maybe the reason why they want the wheel dressed flat but on an angle is because it will then match the same angle that the raker sits in the vise. It would seem to make more sense to just leave the wheel flat right out of ther box but just tilt it to match the angle of the raker and...

    Raker height with grinder

Aaron, turns out Harbor Freight does sell aluminum oxide grinding wheels, 1/4" wide and 4-1/2" diameter. In fact they have a 10-pack of an assortment of other cut-off wheels and flap-discs too for the 10.99 so I think I'll head there right now and use a 20% off cupon. Looks like 4 or so wheels...

    Raker height with grinder

Not sure what grinder you're referring to, but my manual for the 511AX states that you set the grinder head angle at 60 degrees. This is the same angle as my chains get. Then they say to set the "Vise Angle" to zero degrees. This is the adjustment that I normally have on 30 or 35 degrees for...
