Water Heater failed after installing OWB plate heat exchanger

Aren't the newer HW heaters supposed to have an expansion tank installed with them? I know I had to put one on mine when I replaced it a few years ago. However our HW supply line comes directly from the OWB, no exchanger plates.

To heat or not to heat

Saving wood? I burn wood because I want to be comfortable and not have it cost me a dime. When we used the wood stove I used to load it up before leaving and come home to a nice warm house when returning. Cold houses are no fun. Especially if you have a wife and a little one...

    Amish built splitter from Ohio

The amish are like anyone else. It depends on who you work with. Ive been with some scammers and some really good folks over the years. I stick to buying furniture from them though lol.

Log length wood sellers in central Ohio?

There is a company in Columbus that does it. I think they are a tree removal company or something but I've driven past their lot and it's a HUGE lot with massive amounts of logs. I believe they advertise they sell the logs as firewood or sell split wood. If that doesn't work though, best...

    The stockpiles

Man some of you guys really got ahead. Don't you ever worry about the stuff on the bottom rotting before you burn it? Not that I wouldn't mind being that far ahead. Had all of this years wood split and stacked last fall so it's plenty dry and just recently finished up wood for next year...

Monthly cost to run your circulation pump

If your neighbor uses a lot of hot water, it's saving him a good bit I'm sure. The way I run ours in the summer is if it's a day I know we are going to use a lot of hot water (usually Saturdays) I go out in the AM and light the fire, flip on the blower and pump. Once the blower hits it's...

    Creosote Glaze on Classic 5036

That's normal. Don't worry about it. It's from the fire smoldering when the blower isn't in use. I burn very dry seasoned wood and I still get that coating. however if you are burning really wet wood just make sure you check the chimney and be sure it isn't getting clogged

Looking For A Dump Trailer in Michigan

I bought a Quality Steel 12' tandem axel trailer this past winter. It's been by far the best investment I've made. Got a steal though, paid $3K for it and it was hardly used prior to me. I've easily tripled my wood intake ability this year. That said, if I lived on property where I...

    Hardy heater?

They are very popular in my area. Second probably just to Central Boilers. The area we live in doesn't have a lot of natural gas so you see a LOT of OWB's I love ours. We have an H4 and it's done an outstanding job. Only downside is we have to use rain water to fill it (or top it off)...

Jotul 4 wood burner. Is this a good deal?

Agree. Not a good deal at all. Jotul makes great stoves though.

Picked up my "new" wood stove!

You'll be glad you did all this in the warm weather. I never understand why some guys wait to install their stoves or furnaces when it's cold out lol. I say that and the first year I burned wood, I didn't get the stove installed until Thanksgiving haha. Wasn't by choice however.

Picked up my "new" wood stove!

You'll love that much more than heating with the fireplace. I'd try and stick with 8" but you will really enjoy getting a taste of wood stoves vs the fireplace.

    First fire?

It's been a pretty usual summer around here until a few weeks ago. Definitely cooler now staying in the low-mid 70's. Think it was 48 last week one morning but most of the time its in the 50's still. We won't be lighting a fire for quite some time though. Wouldn't mind a cold fall...

hows every ones summer been so far?

Been cutting and hauling like crazy. Between my full time job and the firewood I've been really too busy. Wife is due end of the month so I wanted to have the majority of the stuff done by then. Got about 35-40 cords. Half of it stacked and split since May, the rest waiting in piles that need to...

    OWB backup...........brainstorming needed

If you want central air, definitely go with forced air for your supplementary heating. I assume you have anti freeze in your system if you plan on going on vacation and not keeping the fire going? I just have a buddy stop by once or every other day and he keeps the fire going. Turn the...

May 23 and I just lit the stove!

Noon and 44 here. House was 63 degrees this morning so we kicked on the OWB and it'll run for the next day or two. I have a lot of small stuff that I don't mind burning. Its a pain in the neck to load it with all that small stuff in the cold season anyways.

Mid May 2013 & still burning

Burned the last of the wood for this year, this past weekend during the cold snap. The OWB will smolder for probably another week before it goes out, which is fine for heating hot water. Supposed to hit mid 80's here today lol. I don't mind. Anything that keeps the AC off is fine with me.

    Wood hauler debate

I have an 01 1 ton Powerstroke and a 12' dump trailer, but regardless of the brand you choose diesel is the way to go (aside from the older chevy's, no juice in those) If you are going to have the truck for a long time, the motor will last forever if you take care of it. My powerstroke...

    OWB Cooling?

I really don't think there'd be a benefit at all over central AC by the time you are all done. I've been in buildings with geothermal cooling and it's pretty humid still. If you run it too much the floors get wet. You will be better off just replacing your central AC unit with a newer...

    Boiler pump help

Hardy's are completely stainless steel (even the firebox) so it is my understanding that if you use cast iron, the pump itself will become the "anode rode" and corrode very quickly. However if I'm incorrect in that, I'd rather use the cast iron since they are much less expensive lol...
