    Freehand cut?

If you can't get the log up of the ground, you don't want the bar to go all the way through. If you get it to within a couple inches, the rest will split easily. Your mini mill could be used the same way as Bill uses the beam machine. By attaching the guide to the end of the log, Bill's...

chainsaw mill...Best bang for the buck

A slabbing mill like the Alaskan or Panthermill is the easiest way to cut slabs, but bars that length get very expensive, certainly too much for a single log. You could consider a mill type that cuts from the side, like a Logosol Timberjig or Big Mill and cut from both sides with a shorter bar...

What's the most common log length

A while ago, before I had wood out the ying-yang, a local builder cut down a large white oak just up the street and cut it into 16"-20" sections. I couldn't stand seeing all that go to firewood, so I rough quartered the longer sections from the butt end with a maul and cut about a hundred 5/4"...

    Freehand cut?

I can't believe I wasted all that money on a mill! I like this guy's technique, but his log is quite a bit smaller than Aaron's 30"+ one & I'll bet he's had some practice. I've tried it making a deep cut starting from the far end and it didn't work well at all, but then I can't get a cut that...

    Freehand cut?

Very difficult to get a straight cut through a big log without some sort of guide - even more so if sawing horizontally. The buried end will wander a lot. If you saw vertically, at least gravity isn't working against you. You may get just as good results by cutting a groove across the...

Need AS advise - newbie interested in milling a Black Walnut log

Two important questions for you: 1. Do you want slabs or lumber (or both). Slabbing mills are great for slabs, but not for lumber. They are a real slow way to cut thin boards and you can't quartersaw or cut plain sawn boards from all 4 faces very easily. You can cut slabs through &...

What's the most common log length

I buck my logs to 8.5-9 ft or 10.5-11 ft to fit on 8 ft or 10 ft drying racks respectively. I have a helluva time getting them into the fireplace, though.

Anyone have anyexperience with using a Logosol to build a cabin?

There was an extensive posting on the Logosol owners forum about building a cabin with a Logosol M-5 posted by alaskayukondave in the portable sawmill section. The site has since been overrun by spam, but you may still be able to access the thread by doing a name search. Forum is accessed...

New Logosol M5 and Power Mac 1000

I don't know about compatability of picco sprocket. bar and chain with your saw, but Baileys might. If they don't, check with the UK Logosol folks. You can adjust cuts in 1/8 inch increments by putting a quarter under each pin. Don't now what currency they use for this in the UK.

New Logosol M5 and Power Mac 1000

This is what happens when you exceed the weight limit: Actually a 95 ft pine tree uprooted in a storm and fell on it. Poetic justice? I replaced a few parts & was back at it. The good thing about the shimming issue is that Logosol already had to address it. Should be info available on...

    black walnut

Nice curve on the first slabs you show. Can't get wood like that at Home Depot. I used to avoid curved logs, now I actively seek them out. I was reading about how to make a curved arm for a Morris chair out of straight lumber when the light came on. As for finish to use, you'll have a year or...

New Logosol M5 and Power Mac 1000

Congrats. I've been milling with an M-5 for 14 years now. I think you'll like it. Big issue with saw selection is that the bar needs to be parallel to the sprocket cover. If not, you'll have to shim it, which I think is a PITA. I have a Stihl 066 which does not need shimming but the Husky...

Drying maple slabs in basement or outside?

You can use a tarp as long as it is tented above the stack. I use a pole above and pull the sides of the tarp out with tent stakes or wooden stakes and nylon cord. Before I made these cribs I used PVC pipe as a pole. It can be set on top of cinder blocks put on stickers on top of the...

    Homemade CSM, first post

I assume you have washers between the bar and mill since the chain is thicker than the bar? Chainsaws generate a lot of vibration & fasteners will tend to shake loose. Spring washers will help keep things tight.

Rails for your chain saw mills

I use half an extension ladder. End clamps are captured on the rails and screwed in to the ends of the log. Center is shimmed and held in place with a wooden clamp screwed into the log. Center clamp is not needed on short logs.

    wood for grape arbor

Eastern Red Cedar is very rot resistant but hard to find in large dimensions. Other softwood species you mentioned aren't good choices. White Oak is rot resistant and should be readily available in the Phila area. He'll still want to treat the wood with some type of finish to help it shed...

    How long can logs sit?

Bob - How did you train that snake to keep the log from rolling? Greg -you can expect some degrade over time, the extent of which is highly dependent upon species, time of year, diameter and whether the log is in contact with the ground and the bark is still on it. Commercial mills saw ASAP...

    Slab Wood Fired Kiln

Lots of discussion on drying and MC on Woodweb, for those interested in researching this further. There are also plans for solar kilns. I have been air drying my lumber to date but looking into getting/building a kiln & this is what I have learned from that and other sources: Given enough...

Finally Purchased LT10 and ready to Learn!

Good idea, jnl. The splines don't need to be plywood, but that would certainly be the easiest. One advantage of T&G over loose splines or shiplap is blind nailing. If you have to put up drywall anyway, Dad2Four, I would finish that to see how I liked it before committing to paneling for the...

    Borate treating of boards

You can mix the Timbor to a higher concentration for a single application but it won't stay in solution so you have to use it all. Even with the lower solution you tend to get some borates precipitating out of solution, especially if dust gets in the mix. I usually spray with garden sprayer &...
