    Wood and Coal

I use this 1907 Glenwood Modern Oak 116 to heat my 226yr old house with anthracite coal and it's an awesome heating machine! Tend it twice a day (7am, 7pm) and thats it. It heats 2500 sqft and when it gets to single digits and below I add my Glenwood 208C cookstove to the mix and they keep the...

    Woodstove Photos

Glenwood Modern Oak 116 Here's my latest acquisition. It's a 1907 Glenwood Modern Oak 116 with divided back pipe. It can burn wood but anthracite coal is it's real forte. It's a series match to the Glenwood cookstove in my kitchen also. This thing pumps out serious heat and only needs...

    Re-Plastering inside an Old Chimney

Ha,ha good one Yoop. Actually in the old days the way it was done (by the way it's not plaster) is you'd mix up some soupyish concrete lower a sandbag that just fits on a rope, dump in the mix and slowly pull it up while adding needed mix. You get the idea, the sandbag when pulled would thin...

    resizing split wood question

Yep thats my method. I'd use a miter saw if i had one but this way workout ok cause I cut a few ata time. Like Mark said, the 90s is old wood. Of course if it was stored well and still has weight then it's good to go.

Hey Doc, I've been watching that weather "clipper" out there since the New Year started. Allot of the country going through a deep freeze and in some cases record cold (down south). Can you say Changing climate! :taped: LOL. I get a laugh when I see that Atlanta, Ga, is colder than...

    Looking at add-on wood furnaces

Hey Brad, Happy New Year B, You might have a look see at this Ashley wood/coal furnace also. It's a good add-on type appliance and reasonably priced. I was looking at one down to the True Value Hardware in my town and they look decent for the dosh. I like the dual fuel possibility too...

    I finally bought a skidder

That's a good little tractor Barnie and quite popular. I use a buddy of mines regularly and it's always done me well. Small acreage, felling with saw operations are where it excells. Good luck with her.

Anyone else sick of burning wood?

There are times when I might rather be doing something else but I'll always be a wood burner. It's a challenge to me every year to see how low I can get the oil usage. The pay off is at times like these (tonight) when my family will be over for Christmas Eve Lobsters and everyones hanging out...

    who are we???

I'm 54 years old and have been burning wood since I was a youngster. I spent about 25 years in corporate life and was an Operations VP with my own little 4 seat er airplane and a 45' sailboat. Our company went public and I cashed out maybe 10yrs ago and bought this 200+ year old house up on...

    Ants in wood

I seem them all the time in the course of splitting up the years wood. As soon as they are exposed, they make a run for it if they are not half asleep. If you split your wood before you season (Fastest way) it's not a problem. They will vacate as the wood dries, if there are any left. I've...

    One good thing about snowstorms...

Same here in Maine. It's a howling blizzard at the moment and I'm inside warming by the stove. Just plowed my drive and my brothers and sister and 3 neighbors. I too like the pay it forward theme. Looks like it's gonna be a long night though.

    Snowed in?

Coast of Maine we were cruising along nicely until last week and instant winter. We got about a 10-12" dump of wet snow then it got cold. Today it's howling out there. about 18 degrees but windy (gusts to 60mph they say for later tonight). Snowing to beat the band at the moment but at...

    Question about Ripping Chain

Agreed no need for ripping chain. Ripping chain will cut slower but provide a better finish if you were making boards.

Spent a good day with my father

Those of you who can enjoy it while you can. I just lost my Pops at the end of the summer. He was 81 and although he and Mum were split up, we still hung out allot and did many things together. He was lucky and was pretty healthy for 80 of those years, just selling his Honda scooter a year...

Finally broke down and lit it.

Yep same here. I've been burning (mostly punky crap) for the last week and a half or two now. September was about the best of the summer this year. Last year I bought a couple of bags of stove coal (the big chunks) and would throw a few in a night where there was a nice bed of coals. This year...

Combining two separate stove pipes into one

That's the way it is here too. As long as the chimney has the space you can run flex or solid flue pipe(s).

    Chimney hat or not?

Not sure about a cap on your boiler chimney but it's a must for masonry chimneys with wood stoves. Saves allot of problems down the road caused by rain and snow.
