    12" x 7" x 13' red oak mantle pics

Too sweet! That slab is begging to be turned into a bar top and have fine German beer with some brats, kraut, and spicy mustard served over it. Just sayin...

The final project of a father and his son.

Ya, I've got absolutely nothing to add to the building of the mill, but would like to offer up condolences as well as tell you I think it's really cool what you're up to. And I agree with your dad - very few things can't be torn down with a sledge and enough time.

A mantle? How big is the guy's frickin' fireplace?

    Time for a reminder

I like this site - I had a bunch of questions and got them all answered on the milling forum. Everyone has been fantastically polite and helpful. The lack of swearing is kind of like the lack of laugh-track on a sitcom. You really don't notice how great it is not to have it until someone...

That book had really good reviews on Amazon. It's payday today as well. Any other suggestions on beginning woodworking books?

Help prevent a noob from screwing up some gorgeous walnut...

Hey thanks again everybody. I hope that after some time passes Ill be able to post something worthy on Stonykill's "what are you building with your milled wood?" thread...:msp_thumbup:

Help prevent a noob from screwing up some gorgeous walnut...

Sorry, one other question - I was reading a few links (thanks again VA) and it said that once dried, that didn't necessarily mean the wood would be at it's final shape. Is there any benefit to having the wood dry in the room it will ultimately be used in? In other words, if we're building...

Help prevent a noob from screwing up some gorgeous walnut...

Hey thanks for the advise everybody. Took your advice and restacked after sealing. My method of sealing also included kicking over the primer and spilling it in the garage, and swearing a bunch. :bang: I moved the stack further away from the garage wall and spaced more lath in...

Help prevent a noob from screwing up some gorgeous walnut...

Thanks for the link - that's awesome! The stack... Longest boards are 12ft long and maybe 18 to 20 inches wide. Thickest are 1 3/4 inch. Thinest are 1 inch. The bottom board is sitting on lath, not on the floor. There is a piece of lath about every 3-4 feet (not enough maybe?). Like I...

Help prevent a noob from screwing up some gorgeous walnut...

Gentlemen, Had a great sunday and milled a bunch of walnut with my dad. The moisture content was over 25% and now it must sit, awaiting a time when the wood has less water and Jon has more money so as to build a bar and stock it with nice scotch and have the whole set up overseen by a large...

    Even more Noob than normal

@jwilliams - thanks for the offer...I don't think Im nearly close enough to you unfortunately. @jwilliams and mikeb - I am somewhat embarrassed to say that my dad has a friend with a woodmizer that we're going to use first. I'm sure that's sort of sacriligious to a chainsaw miller... I...

And I'm guessing you also wouldn't start with your best log...practice on a few big limbs or something?

Nice. Thanks MikeB - that actually makes alot of sense. So if I understand it relatively fully, you need guide rails for the first cut and those are provided by the ladder, 2x4s or whatever. After the first cut, you don't need the guide rails because the flat surface is provided by your first...

    Even more Noob than normal

I read through that thread and am ashamed to admit that I was hoping for something even more basic than that. I was really was hoping for someplace I could find a picture of a milling set up with a line pointing to it saying "that's a raker, that's the inboard side of the mill" etc, etc, etc...

    Even more Noob than normal

Hello, I came on this site looking for information on turning a tree into usable lumber...realized that the term milling didn't just apply to grain (ignorant - sorry) and learned the etymology of the last names Miller and Sawyer. My question to all of you is whether or not a thread...
