    Pine / seasoning advice

So opinions seem split on this. I whacked apart a few more rounds last night and they seemed pretty dry, but I'll probably rack as much as I can in the open to be safe. Thanks for the advice.

    Pine / seasoning advice

A neighbor down the street cut down some pine trees about 2 years ago and stacked the logs. He was going to mill it but changed his mind, now it's mine for the taking. I have a Catalytic stove (Blazeking) that does ok on softwoods, so I want to grab as much of this as I can. I went over there...

    Tree ID - Tulip Tree?

Just split it, splits easy, creamy white straight grain, sorry no pics yet. Would true poplar grow as tall and big in diameter? I thought poplar was a relatively slender tree, these were massive. I realize tulip poplar is marginal for firewood but I am buying a new cat stove and plan on burning...

    Tree ID - Tulip Tree?

Western NY...this came from a very tall, 3ft diameter tree that fell in our recent windstorm. I thought it might be a Tulip tree, homeowner confirmed that it was a tall straight tree with a canopy at the very top. I don't have much experience processing Tulip trees, but whatever it is, it seems...

    Tree ID - help

No nut hulls...the squirrels and chipmunks seem to keep the ground pretty clean even around the beech trees too. I will be keeping a close eye out in the fall. I was excited to find some hornbeam and hophornbeam stands on the property too, though I doubt I'll ever be able to bring myself to cut...

    Tree ID - help

Something else I found: http://www.illinoiswildflowers.info/trees/plants/sweet_pignut.html (Sweet Pignut Hickory - Carya ovalis) If you scroll down to the photo right below the heading that says "Photographic Location", that's EXACTLY what the bark on all of my trees look like, even the older...

    Tree ID - help

I have about 30 acres of woods in Orleans County, NY (between Buffalo and Rochester NY). 8 - 10 acres are beautiful mature forest: beech, maple, oak, a lot of dying cherry, plus many examples of this tree I'm trying to identify. The ash borer is moving steadily closer to my area and I'm afraid...

    Logstor pex in ohio?

Where's greenville Ohio? There's a thread linked below that mentions "classic comfort" as a dealer in Greenville, thread is from 2009 but might be worth checking out.

    Logstor pex in ohio?

Dealers tell you to go 12" down to get it out of the sunlight, the casing is not rated for continuous exposure to sunlight. There's enough insulation on it, you don't have to worry about depth unless you're planning on letting your furnace sit idle for long stretches of time. It's just so well...

    Pex under concrete driveway

I installed logstor pipe in my former house a couple years ago. It's heavy duty stuff and does not flex much. You will not get it through 45 elbows, it needs a pretty wide radius to make a turn. I had to go under a pre existing sidewalk, then straight shot into the house through a cinder block...

    Long story simple question

One of the reasons I posted this thread is the number of times I've heard people on this forum emphasize that they like to get two years of drying on oak before they burn it...so it's entirely possible my moisture meter is off, I don't use it as the final measure anyways, but just wanted to get...

    Long story simple question

Nope you're not misunderstanding. I agree splitting them again would be the most effective, I just don't want to reduce them to matchsticks. Either way I have to make the saw cut on some of them to reduce them to the right length, hate to process 2x per split but if that's what it takes then...

    Long story simple question

We moved to a new property last August. Sounds completely backwards but the house we sold sat on a single acre with 4 trees and an OWB, the new property has a pretty efficient indoor stove and plenty of mature wooded acreage to cut from. I hauled in 6 trailer loads of my wood stash from the old...

    Safety gear?

Thanks guys, that's all good information to get me started.

    Safety gear?

We moved into a new property and I'll be graduating from scrounging to doing some more serious cutting in the woods this fall. What kind of buying advice can you give me on chaps, possibly helmet in terms of brands, online suppliers, etc? Thanks.

    Your first post

Probably a wood ID. Never even picked up a chainsaw before buying a house with an OWB in 2011. I've learned a lot from this site and it all kept my family warm, thanks arborist site!

    Who uses masks

We just moved into a new home in August with an indoor stove, but prior to that I spent three winters loading a mahoning OWB 3 times a day. I don't know how it compares to other units but it was a pretty serious shot of smoke every time you opened the door. After the first week I set aside my...

    Can you identify this wood

I burned a big split of mulberry that looked a lot like your pics tonight. Came home and my wife was about to toss it in the stove, I said wait a minute because it came from a score a year ago last summer and I wasn't sure it was quite seasoned. Been debating about trying some of it so i tossed...

    Roll Call

New house for us this year with an older indoor stove and I've been cooking along two fires a day in western ny since about Halloween...except Tuesday when we just about hit 70. Old house had an OWB and I was able to sneak out 6 truck and trailer loads of my stash onto the new property the week...
