    Pine / seasoning advice

A neighbor down the street cut down some pine trees about 2 years ago and stacked the logs. He was going to mill it but changed his mind, now it's mine for the taking. I have a Catalytic stove (Blazeking) that does ok on softwoods, so I want to grab as much of this as I can. I went over there...

    Tree ID - Tulip Tree?

Western NY...this came from a very tall, 3ft diameter tree that fell in our recent windstorm. I thought it might be a Tulip tree, homeowner confirmed that it was a tall straight tree with a canopy at the very top. I don't have much experience processing Tulip trees, but whatever it is, it seems...

    Tree ID - help

I have about 30 acres of woods in Orleans County, NY (between Buffalo and Rochester NY). 8 - 10 acres are beautiful mature forest: beech, maple, oak, a lot of dying cherry, plus many examples of this tree I'm trying to identify. The ash borer is moving steadily closer to my area and I'm afraid...

    Long story simple question

We moved to a new property last August. Sounds completely backwards but the house we sold sat on a single acre with 4 trees and an OWB, the new property has a pretty efficient indoor stove and plenty of mature wooded acreage to cut from. I hauled in 6 trailer loads of my wood stash from the old...

    Safety gear?

We moved into a new property and I'll be graduating from scrounging to doing some more serious cutting in the woods this fall. What kind of buying advice can you give me on chaps, possibly helmet in terms of brands, online suppliers, etc? Thanks.

wood score with possible poison ivy - advice?

My first big score clearing a lot for a builder...up until now it's all been scrounge a tree here, a tree there. We checked out the site last week and it's 100% hardwood, 90% black locust. Perfect location, enough wood to get a year ahead at least. Problem is, there were ominous looking vines...

    More questions on pex install

I have a 2550 square foot farmhouse. The house came with an OWB that is rated at 225,000 BTU/hour maximum output. 180 degree water pumps from the woodburner through ¾ inch pex tubing into the basement over a 65 foot run. Once the water enters the basement, it flows through another 30 foot run of...

Help planning thermopex install for OWB

I’m getting ready to dig my trench for a thermopex install for the OWB. I’m leaving the old lines in place, and digging above them for the new thermopex. The trench will be relatively shallow but within recommendations: 10 – 12 inches. I know some guys go deeper, but for a number of reasons I’m...

    Tree ID - Chinese/Siberian Elm?

I'm going to clean this up for the tree company Monday. My tree guy said the homeowner told him what it was but he forgot. He said it was "Japanese" or "Brazilian something". What do you think? If it is "Chinese Elm" can I leave it to dry over the winter without worrying about rot? Thanks!

    Basswood question

Here's the deal: I've got an OWB and I'm just finishing up my wood for next winter. Well, along comes this guy, he gets my number from one of the tree service companies I deal with, calls me up and tells me he had a bunch of basswood trees dropped last year and wants to get rid of the wood. Some...

    Zipline firewood retrieval

Ok, you can all say I'm crazy but my best buddy installed a wood furnace in his walkout basement and he's always complaining about how wet his backyard is and what a pain it is to grab wood from his pile at the back of his lot. He lives on about 1/2 acre so his wood pile is only 70 feet away...

    OWB efficiency question

So as per my last thread, I'm going with thermopex when I re-install the lines for our OWB. On a 60 foot run, at 180 degrees I was losing about 15 degrees of heat from the woodburner to the house. Since 15/180 = 8.3%, then double it for the return run = 16.5 % total heat loss. Does that mean...

    insulating OWB lines

I bought a house with an OWB three years ago and I'm losing almost 15 degrees of heat between the furnace and the house. The lines leave the house and the OWB in pvc pipe, the install was about 12 years ago and so I have to assume they didn't insulate the lines. My summer project is to dig them...

Tree ID - Fearing the Worst

Hooked up with a guy clearing lots for a couple homes. Walked the site, some young standing maples, a nice big ash the property owner had already felled, and lots of this stuff on the ground. I told him I wouldn't cherrypick so we started loading this stuff. Very light, couldn't figure out what...

2 Questions: Honey locust seasoning time + Q for OWB owners

Rather than post twice here's two completely unrelated questions: 1.) I cut and split a bunch of honey locust in June 2011. I was expecting to use it last winter in the OWB so I split a lot of the rounds on the small side to speed up the seasoning time. Turns out I didn't get that far into...

    OWB Tools

I haven’t seen any discussion about this so I thought I’d bring it up… What kind of tools do you OWB owners use to play around with in the firebox? I inherited an old hoe and steel rake (both with wood handles) when we moved into the house. The former owner was using them in the OWB, so I did...

OWB: Heat Loss from pump to pex?

I'm trying to maximize the efficiency of our OWB, because we've got a very inefficient old farmhouse. It's our second winter in the house, and even after blowing insulation, replacing a couple windows, and chasing down every possible draft I could find, the OWB still can't quite keep up with all...

    OWB - Too efficient?

Just got the OWB fired up last week after getting it back from the manufacturer for a refab. They replaced most of the firebox that rotted out, new insulation, even a new (and bigger!) door. It's working great except for an unexpected problem... Last year (first year I ran an OWB), I started...

    OWB - Filter for debris?

My OWB got a makeover this summer (major rust out, hole the size of your fist on the top of the water jacket). I'm in the middle of getting it up and running again and noticing a lot of left over rust particles in the water. I'm going to try to flush out what I can, but I got thinking, wouldn't...

    Oak...?

Walked into a pile of this at the tree service. It was all small diameter stuff (12" and under) so maybe that explains the smooth bark? I don't come across oak very often but I thought it had rougher bark. Sure looked like oak leaves growing out of the branches to me. What do you think, is it...
