Help in deciding between Stihl MS 462 and 500i Chainsaw

Long term maintenance may be a concern. I've got a 500i in the shop that needs an injection module at $435. A carb for a 462 should be about $150 with less labor to change. I love my 462, but I don't cut hardwood, so others here can tell you better if a 462 is up to your task.

    MS462 timing numbers

I raised the exhaust a little on my 462 and it brought the rpms in the cut up, and I'm thrilled with the result in 24-34 inch tamarack! It out cuts a mildly ported MS460 and stock MS461 by an appreciable margin, so tomorrow I'm attacking my 046 to see if I can get it to beat the 462. I can't...

    Looking for a project, 026? 044?

My first question would be WHY is the case cracked, and then WHERE is it cracked? Epoxy may solve the problem, it may require welding, or replacing the case may be the best option. $200 isn't much for a running 044, but if the case must be replaced, then it's too much, in my opinion

old McCulloch Chainsaw Anyone know what model? I kinda want the bar and chain for my Homelite, but I doubt I'll drive a couple hours to get it.

    lightening up a saw

I too have had thoughts along the same vein. Drilling holes in the con rod (or even crank?) had not occurred to me. I think that drilling the cylinder cooling fins may be advantageous, but I'd want an IR thermometer before I tried it. Oh, imagine the carnage of the rod failing at 13,000+...

    thoughts on my 066

Hey medic8852... That orange cover on the starter in your pic is only supposed to be on when temperatures are below something like 15 degrees Fahrenheit. It reduces the airflow available to cool the cylinder. P&C get too hot, and there'll be seizure.

    Lucky i din't get hurt

When I was a kid, I sent a poulan 5200 clutch racing across the yard 50-60 feet. That really got my attention.

046 poly flywheel on an 064

I cannot comment on " holding up" as I hadn't done anything with the saw after my last post. My other saws were stolen at that time, and that kinda took the wind out of my sails as far as chainsaws. Getting a new post on this thread renewed my motivation. So... The poly flywheel fires...

does porting and mods lower saws life?

Good question. Quite general though. If you have a knowledgeable person port a saw for work, I don't think you'll have to sacrifice longevity to see results. A ported muffler, for instance, was a given on the older 066 MAGNUM Also, the older cylinders supposedly have better ports than newer...

Good lookin' saw! I have not yet had a 044, but I've always heard good things about them. Enjoy :)

    Your # 1 frankensaw

The 066 and 064 cases I've encountered will not mate up at the forward gasket surface of the oil tank. The 066 I'm familiar with has an increased oil capacity. Not trying to knock your saw, I'm working on an 064 which i s a mixture of parts ;) When do we get pics?
