Just remember, a dull chain can make for a bad day. We have countless customers who come into the shop with burned up saws because of a dull chain. For ordinary firewood cutting, I recommend a 20 in bar with Stihl full skip chain. But for limbing, full comp.
Please explain "highly modified". A 026 has to have alot of work done to it to be able to handle the amount of fuel that a big carb will supply it with
Check wear on the crankshaft when you get the thang apart. Always, Always, ALWAYS put a new fuel line in a MS290 when you tear them apart. They are notorious for cracking fuel lines, running lean, and going KABLOOEY!
Any kind of check valve style vent will work. This types of vents will allow pressure that has built up in the tank, to escape. Ive made them for older stihls many times. Works like a charm!
The problem with the 028's is that Stihl made a bunch of different versions of the saw. The older 028's used 2 gears that mesh each other to run the oiler, the newer ones used a single gear that was driven by the clutch drum. Get your serial number off of the saw and try and match it up. Best of...
There is 3 things that you never let another man borrow. Your chainsaw, your lawn mower, and your wife. They will throw a rod in em all! :hmm3grin2orange:
I agree with Tony. Ive worked on a bunch of these saws. With proper maintanance, the oil pump should last a long time. In my opinion, id say the worm gear was shot. Get the whole assemble. You can buy the worm and the gear seperately but replace both and you should be in business!
Split the case to put a intake boot on? Sounds to me like this soo called "chainsaw guy" needs to hop in his Prius and leave. Those saws were the easiest Stihl saws ever made to change the intake boot on!
Ohh. I thought we were talking about the 020 and 020t. In my opinion, stay away from the 020 av. Ive had several come in the shop. It takes alot of patience to work on em!
4 cycle chainsaws are being talked about. But Ive never seen a FS250 with a 4mix engine on it. The biggest stihl trimmer/brushcutter with the 4 mix is the FS130
Im gonna have to go with the Stihl chain. The metal on the teeth is alot harder and will hold a good sharpening longer. I use Oregon chains for cutting stumps, its alot cheaper than the Stihl.
Use a good cylinder hone. Take your time, and dont take to much off the walls. Be sure to clean the cylinder good when you get done. Good soapy water wont hurt it at all!
In my opinion, AMSOIL is the best 2 cycle oil on the market, I mix it 80:1. I run it in everything from my 441's to my BR600. You can take the muffler off and the piston and cylinder look brand new. Doesnt foul at plugs and doesnt smoke. I buy it in bulk because it is expensive. But a $10 bottle...
The 020 is a great saw. The only bad thing about the is that alot of tree care professionals used them as limbing saws and wore them out. They would trade them in on a new one. As long as its got good compression and fire, then it should run. Might have to rebuild the carb and put some fuel...
