Has anyone here ever modified/simplified a cat stove?

Would the metal of the angled box be able to handle 1600 degrees f. from the cat? Will the design provide secondary fresh air for the cat to use when burning smoke? Will this design just let all the heat from the cat go up the flue? Just sayin....

    What's Wrong with the Basswood?

Japanese beetles have been ravaging the lindens here for several years. The beetles were introduced to control aphids and are flourishing wildly. They prefer the lindens over almost anything else so there's little left of the leaves but a skeleton by mid-August.

Most amount of wood from a single tree?

A 113 year old white oak taken from a residential yard last spring yielded 6 full cords. And we didn't take any branches smaller than 3".

    Well, this is taking longer...

Very nice stacking. Alot of work there. Looks like they were piled up against a straight-edge. Excellent air space between stacks. Your grade is A+.

What's the best way to keep cast iron stove clean?

You're supposed to clean these things? Geeze, nobody told me.

    Nice Ash Score

Nice score .. ya almost laugh splitting the stuff 'cause it pops apart so easy.

    Trees fought back

Our apple tree has a pear tree on one side of it and a redbud on the other. They are all close together. I must concede that it usually fires a few warning shots before bonking people. The apples are big and heavy. Looking into whether the small root hairs of these trees are all connected...

    How is ash for ash?

We've been burning ash alot for 3 years what with so much available here. The ashpan load seems on a par with oak and maple. Good heat and burn time, it seems to light right up (it seasons fast) with yellow flame at first and then mellows out to a good slow outgassing for long blue slow flames...

Picture evidence of wood drying from ends

From the sides too Good pic. Some red oak we did but piled it wrong shows sides drying out maybe as fast as 30% of the ends. Sorry, didn't get snapshot. So a little moisture sneaks out of the sides too.

Log delivery or pre-split fire wood

Last spring, we got 3 full cord of tree-length hardwood (2/3 red oak, 1/3 cherry) for $325 USD. Guy said he would run it through his firewood processor for $50 USD. Being cheap, I saved the $50, cut and split it to the size my stove loves. Good exercise. Next time, I'll buy the wood processed...

    You Techies: Secondary Air Question

Got a 2550 cat new last year. The secondary air is separate from the primary air. After the combustor is engaged and burning, the secondary bi-metal coil attempts to CLOSE the secondary intake the hotter it gets in the refractory box. The shutter will only close so much though, because a limiter...

How far a drive to cut wood?

Some lucky folks can just walk out their door to get wood, but for me - I won't measure the dollars so much as I LIKE getting free heat for a bit of work, a saw and time. We'll gather red oak or better 45 miles away (if free) but wouldn't go that far for common maple or less. Though beggars...

Now I see what you guys have been saying

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but maybe I can buy this Pro Mac 700. What would be a fair dollar value to offer for it? Does anyone know what it sold for new? Wouldn't parts be hard to find if need be? The torque compares nicely with the Homelite Zipsaw I had. I mean, I layed on this saw with...

Now I see what you guys have been saying

Thanks hey. Have been longing to upgrade to Stihl Ms361 (4.4 cu.inch) and am looking for ammunition. That pro mac rocks. I must reluctantly give it back to its owner soon, however.

    loosen chain

I loosen it everytime before overnight storage and today I saw why. Was running an old saw with manual oiler and got overzealous with the thumb oil pump while cutting. Ran the oil tank dry without knowing it and noticed loose chain. Bar was warm, chain was hot and I watched as the drooping...

Now I see what you guys have been saying

Have been using a MS290 to cut wood for several years. But today I used a Pro Mac 700 that a buddy wanted 'cleaned and tested'. It sat in his barn unused for 10 years. Put a new Stihl semi-chisel (RM) chain on the saw's 20 inch bar. Coughed on the 4th pull and started on the next. WOW. It's an...

    Echo

Just got an Echo CS-306 2 months ago. Mostly because opinions here (for years) have been good for Echo. I can't talk of reliability yet but it sure is light and cuts through 6" oak and black locust no sweat. Had the dealer install a 12" bar instead of the 14". It hardly feels like you're...

    Bark Up Or Down

Bark upwards. It sheds the rain better. If bark is down, it captures the moisture between bark and cambium layers and rots. Cover the pile anyway.

    Hardwood help please

If you search on "Firewood BTU" in a search engine several charts should show the BTU's-per-cord of various species. Ya can calculate how much less is needed per season with those figures. I'm guessing 2/3 to 3/4 of your normal firewood volume (using oak) per winter than your pine & alder. But...

    Help I.D. this wood

No leaves to be seen because they were laying dead. Many other species in the woods- ash, pin cherry, oak, maples and a few hickory. Alot of maple around. Looking up 'doatey' (??).
