028 clutch drum rubbing on plastic cover

It’s a donor saw. Donating it to my cousin so he can clear some brush and trees at his new house. It wasn’t doing any good in a box. At least trying to resurrect it so it can be used once again. A little time and money and it should last quite a while, I assume.

028 clutch drum rubbing on plastic cover

Saw never came with a bar or chain. Stole one off my 026 to make some test cuts and verify that everything was working right. Considering a rim sprocket conversion kit. Not sure yet.

028 clutch drum rubbing on plastic cover

Saw was free, so anything I put into it is still considered low budget.

028 clutch drum rubbing on plastic cover

It’s getting a new sprocket, bar and chain. Just needed to work the kinks out before ordering the sprocket. I am in southwestern PA about 2 minutes south of Pittsburgh. When it was all said and done, I think we got like 8”.

028 clutch drum rubbing on plastic cover

Ok, might be the last post for this problem.... Since I couldn't find my feeler gauge (which is at camp, I think), I used a penny to show the gap with everything installed. Not sure if that is normal, or excessive, but to close this gap, I used another sprocket washer against the original flat...

What’s wrong with me guide bar

Have you cleaned out the groove of the bar really good? I have had some instances where oil, sap, and sawdust have accumulated in that groove and become so compacted that it causes what you describe. I have an original stihl bar groove cleaner tool and I am always amazed how much junk comes out.

028 clutch drum rubbing on plastic cover

It’s perfectly fine. I like the discussion and brainstorming. Learning a little bit more about my saw and its variants with each post. I appreciate all of the help so far. Putting this back together, I didn’t have very many pieces left over (just a few screws here and there which may have gotten...

028 clutch drum rubbing on plastic cover

This the best I can do. The handguard is an early one with no viewing windows. It has the spring to keep pressure forward but the saw did not come with any other brake parts. I have looked around for some but didn't have any success finding any, especially with the older style brake band. This...

028 clutch drum rubbing on plastic cover

Thanks for the pics. Funny, my spur sprocket is a Stihl part, too. I can't tell from the pic, but is there a really thin washer between the drum and clutch?

028 clutch drum rubbing on plastic cover

Yeah, I pretty much found out that I can’t go by the labeling on the IPL because of so many variants. I believe that is a very early version of the 028. I’m 99.9% sure that the cover is correct as it has the peninsula piece of plastic near the bar studs. The newer versions of the saw had a...

028 clutch drum rubbing on plastic cover

I have the clip, just must have not included it in the pic.

028 clutch drum rubbing on plastic cover

Here ya go. According to the IPL, I am missing a washer between the clutch and drum.... 1118 162 8935... maybe enough play without it to rub? but that doesn't make any sense to me. If anything, I would have thought I needed another washer to hold the drum tighter to the inside and away from the...

028 clutch drum rubbing on plastic cover

The cover was the newer of the two that came with the box of parts. Not aftermarket. Both are Stihl part number 1118 021 1102

    How to check cylinder compression

How many times did you pull the starter rope? It takes 5-6 pulls to reach full compression reading

028 clutch drum rubbing on plastic cover

I am in the midst of rebuilding the 028 WB that was completely disassembled, in a box. I have most of the pieces. Need some help with the correct assembly of parts for the clutch drum, oil sprocket spur gear, etc... I ran it today just to run it. Had some oil seeping through the clutch cover and...

    357 or 359

Maybe he meant 10 gas cans? Still, good score! I have a 357XP I scored at a farm auction. Leaking oil badly as it sat. No one wanted to fuss with it. Stole it for $150 and the fix was a $10 updated oil pickup tube. Love that saw.

    028 WB help

I was going to go that route just because of the cost and the current ones are beat up quite a bit. I figured I could get new caps and new gaskets for less cost than just the gaskets. My concern was getting the correct size and correct thread pitch (if that's what you call it)

    028 WB help

Thanks Harley T, I was showing 0000 992 6302 for the fuel cap gasket, and 0000 992 6305 for the oil cap gasket. And when I google them, I find crazy prices. I will use your part numbers. I have nothing to lose. I'm really confused as to how to read these 028 IPL's for my saw. I'm assuming...

    028 WB help

While cleaning out some storage, I just happened to come across an old 028 Wood Boss that someone gave to me in pieces, in a box. It was given to me some 13 or 14 years ago and I had every intention of resurrecting it back to life, but that never happened. Apparently, they tried to fix it up...
