Where to get CHEAP fruit and nut trees?

This place might be worth your drive: Sustainable Wildlife Habitats: Products Though IMO you're a little late for planting this spring. I bought apple trees at Menards and whips from Arborday. Pretty happy with the Menards apple trees, arborday is a hit or miss source for a few...

    Pin oak innjection data.

I'm not an arborist. But are you trying to develop a diy version of this:? https://www.treestuff.com/store/catalog.asp?category_id=26&item=369 I stumbled across that in my search for EAB solutions last year, but agree with the people here (more knowledgeable than myself) that holes in...

New House, wanting advice on what trees to plant

Red oaks grow reasonably quickly for a tree not considered a "fast growing tree". I have a tuliptree / tulip poplar and that would be good in the mix, it handles the Waukesha cold just fine. Silver maples also grow very quickly, some don't like their invasive roots but that sounds like it...

    Need Planting Suggestions

Eastern arborvitae has moderate salt tolerance, green all year, you can find it anywhere. You can find some pretty large ones if it's urgent. There really isn't enough criteria for there to be a "best" answer, I don't really think there would ever be a best answer. A line of Blue Spruces...

    Black Walnuts needed

If you asked in August/September it wouldn't be a problem. Sorry we have a foot of snow right now. And with the drought we didn't have as many last year, either, to they're not easy to find. To be honest with TCD I'd consider finding something else. Even though I love the wood and I like...

    re-grading yard and planting grass?

I think this would be a fantastic discussion if.... I think this would be a fantastic discussion if we weren't singling out the original poster. Most people only have so much space and you have kids and a car to park and want to grow carrots and things have to co-exist. And so asking this...

    re-grading yard and planting grass?

If people are coming here and asking questions (which is what this forum is for) and are getting a one sided black and white answer based on basically nothing (I still haven't seen what type of tree it is, or a picture of it) it doesn't take an arborist to figure out it's bad advice. It's...

    EAB reaches Wisconsin

Soil Drench I'm the "EAB is ten miles from my home" guy, or at least one of many. I only have one tree I plan to treat, it's a Black Ash about 8" DBH that's not horribly valuable but it is in my front yard. To be blunt it's not a 3000 dollar tree so I'm not willing to pay an arborist to come...

    re-grading yard and planting grass?

If it was grass or trees in the yard grass would win. I wouldn't tell my kids they couldn't play outside because that area is reserved specifically for the tree... for all of eternity. But amazingly I have a good mix of them in my yard, and when I look around the neighborhood I'm not alone...

    Need help propagating birch branch

Did you scar the base and dip it in rooting hormone? Outside of a willow tree I don't think you can use that large of a cutting, but what do I know. I'd fill a bucket with coarse sand and/or peat moss and make sure it stays moist and wait->see.

    EAB reaches Wisconsin

EAB in WI The article is kinda misleading when it states the "money to fight EAB is drying up" because actually the money wasn't used to fight it, it was to detect it. And that was IMO a failure since the purple EAB detectors aren't where the reports are coming in. Recently one was found on a...

    Autumn Blaze Maple Help

I'm not an expert, just a guy with some trees. To me, your maple transplant looks good. I'd error on the side of overwatering it instead of worrying about wet feet. It's not going to be "normal" for months after the transplant, some wilting/discoloration isn't out of the norm for any...

    re-grading yard and planting grass?

If you can't add a lot of bulk definitely get a soil test and then you can add only what's really necessary. I'd still plan on getting someone with a power aerator out there, they'll get penetration for sure and be less damaging to the tree. I think [sight unseen] that a tiller is out of the...

    re-grading yard and planting grass?

First off if you're planting grass seed in July you haven't done enough reading on the subject. I think the conservative answer for roto-tilling six inches deep you would have to be outside the drip line. I doubt that's what you want, though, because you trimmed the tree so you could grow...

Need suggestions for replacement trees in ND

Could be. I have a few in our yard, one probably a bit larger than those. If those grew well most other maples should also. Maybe Silver Maples if you want them fast, Sugar Maples if you want stronger wood, or Red Maples if you want to split the difference? I couldn't ID a box elder...

Questions about large live oak acquisition and transplant

I'd rent a uhaul/rider truck or maybe an enclosed trailer and drag one back from two hours away. It's not that I don't think your plan is fantastic. I wish you'd show up at my front door. But the bigger the tree the less likely it is to survive this and the more expensive it's going to be...

Need suggestions for replacement trees in ND

It's probably not a bad first step to take a look at the trees that are around you (I see tons in the background) and see what is growing well. At least then you can have some idea of what will tolerate your climate and soil conditions. Then, is there any indication as to what killed those...

ANyone deal with Arbor day foundation? I have had bad exp.

Well not getting anything at all is obviously a reasonable complaint. Let me give you some pics of what you should expect if/when things actually show up. Here are my "10 free trees" though I got the mix. I threw my car keys in the middle for reference. The Silver Maple in the foreground is...

ANyone deal with Arbor day foundation? I have had bad exp.

I'm sure there are a lot of negative complaints from people who expect to get ten three foot tall trees that all thrive on any surface for 40 years for ten dollars. Any arborist (and you're on a site presumably full of them) or even a casual gardener would understand that it's just not...

ANyone deal with Arbor day foundation? I have had bad exp.

Once There are a lot of bad experiences with them if you search the internet. I think a lot boils down to the fact that to keep the price ridiculously low they have to use USPS which really isn't a great way to transport trees (or anything that is very time sensitive and should really be...
