Im not familiar with that saw, but you may want to check the tank vent (if it has one). An easy way to check is get it hot and after it dies, slowly remove fuel cap. Listen closely for air being sucked into tank. Tighten up fuel cap an see if it'll crank up. If it does you've got a tank venting...

I think you are on the right track. There is a tank vent inside the fuel tank. Sounds like its clogged up. There are different ways of getting it out. I take a long thin screwdriver and push it out from inside the tank. You should be able to see it by looking through the fuel fill hole. Its at...

I prefer the meteors too, but i would stick it in. It should be ok. Like others have mentioned, oem or camber ring and oem circlips. If things do go sideways with it, you have given him fair warning.
