Any one cut fire wood with a "vintage" saw

I agree with the chain brakes. All mine have chain brakes. The 028 did not come with one, and it was the older harder to find type of brake setup. I watched fleabay for about a year till I found the correct brake set up. The 056 is 87cc but I have a good magnum cylinder to go on it if the need...

Any one cut fire wood with a "vintage" saw

All I use for wood cutting is in my signature. Don't have anything newer. Yes, the 028 is rebuilt, but the Jred, and 056 are all original and just keep chugging along. The 028 has the super cylinder now, and is my primary saw. But, I only cut wood seasonal for personal use of 5 full cords for me...

Blower on fireplace insert not working properly

Bypass the variable speed switch and see if it runs at top speed. If it does, then it is the variable speed controller. YD

    Hydralic splitter storage

I store my splitter in my garage when not in use. I have a crowded garage with all the tools and stuff inside, like atv, riding mower, couple of dirt bikes, rolling tool boxes etc. Anyways, to make tucking the splitter (huskee/speeco 22 ton) away easier, I store it with the beam in the vertical...

    Heating a house with wood

Let me cut to the chase: My home is 12 years old, 2000 sq ft colonial, I live in Michigan, and no design consideration was made when building the house with regards to using a wood burning stove/insert. I put an insert in my prefab zero clearance fireplace about 5 years ago. To sum it up, I...

Anyone have experience renting out their own log splitter?

Nobody (or very, very few) people will take care of your stuff like you will...

Built a new log jack today!

Good deal, I have some 1x1x1/8 but the hook seems to be a challenge. I have an old tire iron I could use for the hook, but I also like the double joint you created...

Built a new log jack today!

Maybe I missed it, but how long is the main bar and what dimensions is the square tube steel? 1x1 by 1/8th inch thick? Looks great!

    just realized im old {or is it old school}

I'm 50 years old and consider myself "old school". Had to break down and get a splitter a few years ago. Chronic tendonitis from splitting with a maul and 2+ full cords of American elm, some around 40 inches in diameter led me to tractor supply for a huskee 22 tonner. Tendonitis is...

    my wife kills me

My motto: "Women-can't live with em, can't run through a wood chipper!" Actually, don't try to figure em out. It will only drive you insane. KD

How to sharpen Maul and ax with files

I have reshaped old worn out axe heads with a hand held grinder and flapper wheel, as well as some work with a belt sander. Never had a problem with losing the temper. A bastard file works great for keeping axes sharp. I usually hit them after each splitting/chopping session. I work the file to...

This scrounge score could be one for the history books. But there's a problem.

Get verbal permission from someone at the college, or someone from the tree removal crew. Get a verbal and a name only. That way no one gets nervous about liability and if someone stops you, your not totally in the wrong. "I talked with Joe Blow and he said it was OK". If johnny law or who...

Is this normal splitter behavior? (Huskee 22T)

As mentioned before, check all your hose clamps, or even better, replace the clamps with better quality clamps, pick up a spare filter (there are a few posts on filter cross reference numbers) and medium strength loc-tite to the the bolts that hold down the engine and the pump (take them off...

Working the bugs out of heat circulation.

The problem I have with using my furnace blower is the return air circulates through the ductwork located in the basement of my home (where the furnace is located). If I used my furnace blower it would cool the air too much. My basement is cold because the furnace never runs because the wood...

Working the bugs out of heat circulation.

Those numbers are pretty much what I get with my colonial home. Darn near exact temps in the upper floor and the main floor where my insert is. I don't have any grates or use the blower on my furnace. I just use a few small walmart fans to move the cool air out of the bedrooms and down the...

Used an old tire to split forewood for the first time

I drilled some drain holes in my tire so there is no standing water to breed mosquitos in the summer. Also ran a bolt and some chain thru the holes so I can lash the tire down to a pallet or a stump and keep it from moving around/falling off. Speeds things up even more. KD

    CCW while firewooding?

I have a ccw permit here in michigan. I carry a fair amount of the time. I find my .45 smith is too big and bulky to carry while working in the woods, so I just keep a little colt .25 pocket auto in my back pocket. I know a .25 aint much, but I hope it will keep "whatever" at bay till I grab the...
