    Hey oldsaw!!!

Ummm, a Diesel Rabbit truck????? LOL! I was around back then, and the Rabbit diesels were a total piece of junk when they were new let alone 25 years after the fact...and I can hardly imagine a truck version. Can you say farfignugen? ('piece 'o crap' in german) (sing along everyone!) De da...

    Oil ratio

If you stick to 16:1 ratio on all old saws you'll most likely never have a problem. If you switch to a ratio with less oil then you roll the dice and play the odds. I'll stick with the 16:1 mix.

    First tank of fuel

Uh, the more oil in the mix, the more lubrication for the engine, and the less likely to seize up the piston. (And more leeway you have for improperly adjusted carbs) I run all my old saws (more than 15 years old) at about 15:1, and new saws at 32:1, and adjust the carbs accordingly to run...

    Hurt by a Vermeer 252

Say there was an emergency....and a small child somehow ended up running toward one of these units, and though you immediately shut the unit down and tried to stop the child from contacting the unit....to no avail because the blade keeps spinning for 10 seconds..... Now say it was your...

    ms290

That "arse corker" comment was a funny one...thanks for the laugh, Space. As for the 290...I'd sooner be a proverbial "arse corker" than own one.

    Wanting to start milling

Careful there. Better check with your Stihl dealer on whether they will warrant the saw for use with a chainsaw mill attachment......as some apparently don't. I'd get it in writing (if possible) if I were you.

    Stump removal w/chainsaw or sawsall?

If it is a decent sized stump out of a decently hard wood, then the above statement is the best advice in this entire thread. Don't ask me how I know.

Needle Bearing / Clutch Drum Bearing Lubrication ??

The manuel states that you should put a few drops or so of "engine oil" (which I interpret to mean 2-cycle oil) in the clutch area. I put a few drops in the gaps between the 'shoes' and a few drops in the center and call it good. I'm assuming that it has something to do with extending the life...

    The Old Giants

By all means ....please post a picture of the McCulloch Super Pro 125 wearing a Burger King crown. We all know that the SP125 is the true 'king of saws'.

    Drop starts

With a warm saw that you are familiar with and know what you are doing it appears safe enough. Any saw in untrained (and trained) hands is dangerous though. Use common sense....if you're not comfortable drop starting a saw then don't do it.

is there torque in a new saw?

The big Macs come out and play whenever there's a dirty job that requires lots of torque.

Any Stihl 650 magnum owners out there???

Sap's been busy. But it is funny how the Stihl fans will eat their own shat.

    075: 3/8 or .404

LOL! Yeah, but 3/8 doesn't shovel out the chips quite like .404 .063 does. It's like the difference between a 1968 Ford Mustang and 1968 Dodge Charger.
  15. coveredinsap

    075: 3/8 or .404

Once you go .404 .063 on one of those big old saws with lots of torque you never look back....and never stop smiling whenever you run it. Save the 3/8 chain for the high rpm saws. Those old monsters were born to run .404

some chainsaw "wisdom" from another site

I see nothing wrong with the list. He did a good job in fact. The only time this list would not apply is if you are buying the saw to use 24/7. Then it makes sense to stick with the 'pro' grade saws than can be easily serviced/rebuilt. The focus of the list is hurricane cleanup saws.

    First Day Milling

Nice photos, thanks. If you are in the pictures....who's doing the camera work? :) The only suggestion I would make is to initially mill the boards as thick as possible....2" is preferrable as a minimum to help prevent warping, etc. You can always mill them down further after they dry. And...

    chipper deaths

It is a combination of things.....not any one thing. Some accidents are because of stupidity. Some accidents are because of poorly trained personnel or lack of safety training. Some are because of inexperience. Some are because of fatigue. Some are because of complacency around the...

Can the boom of that tractor come back and strike the operator in the head? It sure looks like it can....hardhat area regardless.

bought stihl 066, did I get a lemon?

They make a special spray cleaner/degreaser for the Paslode cartridge/cordless nail guns that is friendly on plastic and seals and made for removing the nasty residue left from the ignition/detonation of gasses in the cordless guns. Sold under the 'Paslode' label, it is just like brake cleaner...
