hi all, I have been given a stihl 044 and it's reasonable condition but it seems to lack power
The compression is 150psi and the piston rings are free and do not stick
Also the is no exssesive scoring
However the piston does have a bit of sideways movement in cylinder! Which I've never noticed on any other saw before
Is this normal and what's exceptable?

Any more than .003 sideways movement the piston is worn out, you can get by with a bit more front to back movement or clearance as the intake skirt of the piston wears faster that the exhaust side but by the time there is .005 clearance on the intake skirt the piston is rocking in the bore badly.
