the voices in my head tell me to buy chainsaws
After reading through 20 odd pages of threads and going over a bunch of tech notes and IPLs I put this together hopefully it is helpful to somebody. The many fine folks here were invaluable in helping me understand as much of this as I can absorb so far :)
Pictures at the bottom of the post and corrections/additions welcome.

Thanks to Jacob J for the tons of good info on this topic.

Also attached is some interesting 064/066 documentation in a PDF that I hadn't seen here before.

There are at least two version of the 064 crankcase with different mounting holes for the ignition coils.

QUESTION - I have a flywheel 1203/1204 with a single keyway, when I line up the magnets with a dual keyway 1203 flywheel the single keyway lines up with the 1:00 keyway rather than the 12:00 keyway when viewed from the outboard side. So is this a limited or unlimited flywheel??

Thanks
Dave

Thanks MM
at some point I need to figure out the whole deal with the different versions of the tank handle assemblies, air filter and cover setups and different cylinders
I am hoping to go visit a guy tomorrow who has a literal room full of shop manuals and ipls to gain a little more knowledge.

Buckthornbonnie also sent me a pic of a case with all four mounting holes, I will include that in the next update.

I didn't explain that very well Gun, and thanks for helping my poor feeble brain get this :)

I don't see any X or P markings on the 1203 dual keyway model, I am wondering if the right or left keyway is the X?
IMG_7201_zpswmj9cryh.jpg

the flywheel on the left here is a dual marked 1203/1204 and the one on the right is the 1203 dual keyway, I cleaned it as best I can without going ultrasonic and don't find an X or P anywhere.

Front of single keyway 1203/1204 flywheel the slot lines up with the right slot on the dual key above.

the Back of the 1203/1204 makes it look like there should be two keyways but there is only one, is this version maybe compatible with both types of coils or is that just wishful thinking :)
Dave

I also have a flywheel with dual keyways its the 1122 400 1203. It has keyways B and P. When it had the CDIC coil, the flywheel was set at the P slot. Does that mean if I install a 0000-400-1300 coil I would set the flywheel to slot B? The B keyway is about 5 degrees retarded timing from the P slot. Does the universal coil need the timing retarded a little to work? Thanks..

1300 coil is a straight up no retard coil the rest have retarded timing for starting ease. This is the reason for matching flywheel/keyway to proper coil for the right timing. Cross'em up and a 6" flame out the carb will alert you. Ken

Understand!! LOL... Thanks for the input. I was just trying to wrap my head around ignition timing with different coils. I installed a 1300 coil into my o64 when my Prufex coil went out, I was lucky to have the two keyed flywheel. Is it normal for the 1300 coil to be a little more hard on the hands to start?

ok can someone answer this...I have an 066 with the 1122 400 1209/1214 flywheel with single keyway. It has the 1122 400 1311 coil which is dead. Will the 0000 400 1300 coil work or will I need a different flywheel?

if it ran with the setup that is on it now, than yes an unlimited coil with the right screw mount should work
IF you bought it as a non running parts saw then all bets are off as the dual marked flywheel may be for the limited coil OR the unlimited but not both
Dave

yes it was bought as a non runner that supposedly ran with that setup then lost fire according to the guy I got it from. But who knows? what do you suggest?

AARGH - do you have a generic universal coil handy to test with? You can pick one up aftermarket pretty cheap, that might be the easiest route, but be prepared to learn that you either need an unlimited flywheel or a limited coil.
Wait a bit and see if someone can tell us a way to identify the dual number 066 flywheel positively, then you could just find a good coil of the right type.
Dave

The moral of the story is to not buy basket case saws of this series...

Not at all. We round up any and all 1122 series saws that come our way. It's just a matter of learning what works. I remember the first 064 I built from parts........I thought I'd never figure out which ignition parts worked, and which ones didn't. Now I realize that if one flywheel doesn't work with a 1300 "dummy coil", then I need the larger CDIC coil. And vice-versa.

Excellent thread Dave and I'm glad to contribute in some small way... Jacob J's (and many others) info has saved me from my itchy ebay trigger finger these days.
As Mastermind said, buying these 1122 series can give you a stockpile of parts that may or may not fit at first, but will eventually make a saw and/or help save a fellow AS/FHC's member saw from the trash.
