Anyone else run across these?

Bark similar to a cottonwood but the trees are much smaller, usually topping out around 16-18" dbh by me. Waxy/shiny leaf similar in shape to aspen.

I've only found these in the far north areas where I cut. Always growing in clay/very wet soil.

They split extremely easily by hand. Seems to be a little lighter than aspen when dried but still burns a lot better than balsam fir or cedar.

Also know as black poplar, I think it has a large range. The natives up here use it to smoke fish. Most of the ones Ive seen up here are pretty ugly. It may also have very limited commerial value.

My Dad calls it Palm of Gilligan.

Took me a while to figure out what that was!
