Hello,
We are a group in Quebec that recently undertook a 20 year management plan
for private wood lots. After the past season of cutting.. what had been
proposed as a "selective" cut turned out looking more like a "clear" cut.
When does one become the other?? Are there industry guidelines or
standardized definitions? Is "commercial thinning" something else again?
We are wary to proceed as there is quite alot of division over what has
already transpired. Any help you can be on the topic would be appreciated.

Forestry hookups

I would check out the Eastern Ontario Model Forest Program - they can guide you and help you set up a program dealing with the differences between selective thinning processes, and clear cut, pending what your final objective is.

Their office is I believe in Kemptville, on Kemptville College campus. (Through the Ministry of Natural Resources) Plus there are numerous forestry organizations in the Ottawa/Quebec area that you could contact and they will send an individual out to either help/direct you in the appropriate fashion. (Even contact your local Conservation Authority) Otherwise I would hire a forester, with a degree. If you are interested in that route, I may have a few names for you. Drop me a line if you are interested.
