So I'm stirring up some eggs in a iron skillet on the stove, looking forward to a eating them, when suddenly I had a thought. The thought was about 5 big well seasoned ash splits I'd thrown in the stove, on a bed of very hot coals. And an air control that was still wide open.....

I sprinted to the basement and got there before it was quite to the over-fired range, and made it back before the eggs burned. No harm no foul I guess, and it doesn't happen very often, but I still worry one of these days I'm gonna space out a little too long.......

wow I didn't think a elitist, communist, socialist, liberal stove could put out that much heat

I've overdone it... both the firebox and the eggs... crap happens.
Hey, I saved 'em both this time. The eggs were good, but not as good as ours - the girls aren't laying this time of year :(

Well, I just checked your profile page, and near as I can remember I'm not as old as you..... close maybe but not quite!

Yes, it was probably just my irrational fears - the stove was actually cold!

I loaded our firebox full one night, it was going to be close to single digits. I was tired and went in bed, but noticed the house was awfully hot and smelled hot. When I woke in the morning,I didn't have time to check the furnace. After being at work for a few hours, I got a call from my wife. I forgot to latch the door on the furnace. When I came home, I checked the high temperature during the night, the house hit over 80 degrees. Whoops, I was lucky. Fortunately, there was no damage done.

Yeah - that's my nightmare. With the 30' insulated liner to the basement stove that thing would be an inferno.

My out door wood stove has been burning 24/7 for the last few weeks. The solenoid went out so I opened the damper door a little bit Water temp stays 165-185 But a am always wondering of it is getting too hot. So far so good.

Did that a few weeks ago. Threw a couple chunks of locust on and wandered off. A little while later I smelled the stove pipe and ran downstairs. I was a few minutes away from a nuclear meltdown. I don't leave the stove now till the air is off...

We have a 32' chimney. I think it was the 1400 cfm blower and barometric damper that kept things within control.

Guys, wake up and pay attention. Hate to read about someone burning their house down...
Well, yeah, avoiding that is part of the plan, and really why I started the thread. I do take it very seriously, but the problem is that with something you do several times a day for months the odds are good you'll mess up once.

I like the idea that I read on here a while back about setting a regular old fashioned kitchen timer when loading the stove, so no matter where you wander off to, that alarm will bring ya back to the reality of needin to tend the fire
My uncle sets the timer on his kitchen stove. Really should start doing this, myself. Glad you brought that up.

LOL - "What the hell is that thing going off for anyway?"

I left the door open a crack to get some good flames rolling, buddy stopped by and cracked a beer in garage, then got the "Oh Schmit!!" thought in head half way thru said beer and ran downstairs. Nothing to worry about but it happens every once in a while. I always like to think it is good to get the "carbon out".......
