Help! Japanese Maple fungus

New home, new tree. Looks like a fungus is doing its work on the tree.

What can be done to save it?!

Sapwood decay fungus, perhaps Irpex.

Something else killed those sections of bark and sapwood such as sunscald or verticillium wilt.
