Help me out guys. What kind of wood is this

Any advice on air drying a softer wood like that. Guess its time I expand my horizons. Im used to cherry walnut and white oak that's it. some pine but hell I don't even dry that lol

Elm & hackberry (in the elm family) will also bounce the splitting maul back at you. Best identification is a close-up look at the end grain. Here's a web site that is a great reference: http://www.hobbithouseinc.com/personal/woodpics/
