The serial number is #6490774. It is kinda rough looking and must of been a work saw. Nobody really knew much about it.

Took the saw over to the shop, cleaned it up a little. Bad news the oil tank has a Crack on the lower part of the flywheel side. I think my friend may be able to tighten it after I take it apart. Not much compression. The piston does not look that bad on the exhaust port. Has good spark. But not enough compression to pop.

The ring was stuck on the piston , I had to push it out. Could be why there was low compression.

The inside of the cylinder felt pretty good I used my Finger nail and really could not catch anything.

So I can be confident that it is a 371xp.

Yeah the black tag. That's definitely a 0 and not a 6 ? I had a new 371 a long time ago in '96. I don't see to many around.
It's definitely got the signs of 371.
There is another thread that says the 371 does (or may?) Have an extended top cover that passes the muffler with a metal strip and the air filter snaps are orange and not grey. That makes it a 372 cover then. It was also said they both have had single and double rings. Perhaps one or two years? Also the 372 has a see through tank and the 371 never did. I see you don't have the inside dog but a mechanic/porter a know well said the 371 at one point had a third hole that lined up with the mount bolt. He brased a few up for me but they would snap off. They may have only done that for a year as well?
