alright guys. im new to this and looking for gear. i do not know the difference between L pads and T bads for climbers. what would be best for a beginner be? thanks

If you're rec climbing, you shouldn't be using spikes at all. They should only be used on tree removals because they cause damage to the tree.

If you are doing removals, and need spikes, then I'd say neither. L is worse of the two, but T's are not much better. Superclimbers are the best leather pad I've found, but better ones exist....padded metal, fiberglass/carbon are the best to be found.

I agree with dd, spurs are only for removals and should never be used for pruning or recreational purposes. IMO the aluminum so called "caddy pads" are the best around. They're rock solid and will not allow your spurs to twist like some of the leather pads do.
